Overview

The Goodway GS-6000 is a heavy-duty slant-bed lathe that turns Ø880 mm (34.6 in) and up to 3,300 mm (129.9 in) long. In the three-model GS-6000 series it is the small-bore, fast-spindle version: Ø115 mm (4.5 in) bar capacity, 15 in or 18 in chucks and a high gear range that reaches 2,000 rpm.

Goodway builds the series on a 45° true slant bed with over-sized box ways. The spindle is driven through a 2-step gearbox by a motor rated 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 37 kW (49.6 hp) for 30 min., and the maker quotes 4,300 Nm of maximum spindle torque. Low range tops out at 550 rpm.

Three beds are listed, with Z travel of 1,050 mm (41.3 in), 2,020 mm (79.5 in) or 3,300 mm (129.9 in) and turning lengths of 1,020 mm (40.2 in), 2,000 mm (78.7 in) and 3,300 mm (129.9 in). X travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), or 520 mm (20.5 in) with the live tooling turret. The tailstock base moves 790 mm (31.1 in), 1,790 mm (70.5 in) or 3,200 mm (126.0 in) to follow the bed.

Only one variation exists, M, which adds C-axis control and a 12-station live tooling turret. It is a serious one: ER50 collets, 10 ~ 3,000 rpm and a 9 kW drive that Goodway compares with a standard machining center. There is no Y-axis or sub-spindle in this series. The 2,000 rpm high range is what sets this model apart from the GS-6600, which is limited to 1,100 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø880 mm (34.6 in) turning diameter under a Ø930 mm (36.6 in) swing
  • 2-step geared spindle with 4,300 Nm of maximum torque, per Goodway
  • 2,000 rpm high range, the fastest in the GS-6000 series
  • Turning length up to 3,300 mm (129.9 in)
  • Optional live tooling with ER50 collets and a 9 kW drive

Limitations

  • Bar capacity is Ø115 mm (4.5 in), the smallest in the series
  • No Y-axis or sub-spindle variation is listed
  • Low gear range is limited to 550 rpm
  • Live tooling speed stops at 3,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the spindle speeds of the GS-6000?

The 2-step gearbox gives a low range up to 550 rpm and a high range up to 2,000 rpm. The motor is rated 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 37 kW (49.6 hp) for 30 min., and Goodway quotes a maximum spindle torque of 4,300 Nm.

02 How big a workpiece fits in the GS-6000?

Swing is Ø930 mm (36.6 in) and maximum turning diameter Ø880 mm (34.6 in). Maximum turning length is 1,020 mm (40.2 in), 2,000 mm (78.7 in) or 3,300 mm (129.9 in), depending on the bed. Chucks are 15 in or 18 in.

03 Can the GS-6000 mill?

In the M variation. It has a C-axis and a 12-station live tooling turret with ER50 collets running 10 ~ 3,000 rpm. Goodway describes the drive as a 9 kW (30 min.) dual-wound motor. X travel with this turret is 520 mm (20.5 in).

04 How does the GS-6000 differ from the GS-6600 and GS-6800?

By bore and speed. The GS-6000 passes Ø115 mm (4.5 in) and reaches 2,000 rpm. The GS-6600 passes Ø175 mm (6.9 in) or Ø205 mm (8.1 in) and reaches 1,100 rpm. The GS-6800 passes Ø260 mm (10.2 in) and reaches 800 rpm.
