Overview

The Goodway GS-200 is an 8 in box-way turning center with Ø65 mm (2.6 in) bar capacity, a 4,500 rpm spindle and Ø420 mm (16.5 in) of turning diameter. Where Goodway's GLS lathes of similar chuck size ride on linear guideways, the GS-200 uses box ways on a 30° slant bed, which the maker ties to heavy-duty and interrupted cuts.

Its motor is an αP series wide-range type, and Goodway's claim for it is specific: full horsepower output arrives at half the rpm of a standard motor. The ratings are 11 kW (15 HP) continuous and 15 kW (20 HP) for 30 min. For a job shop this matters on large diameters, where the spindle turns slowly and an ordinary motor would be well below its rated power.

Standard and L beds give 600 mm (23.6 in) or 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel and 590 mm (23.2 in) or 1,190 mm (46.9 in) of turning length. X travel is 240 mm (9.4 in) and the swing Ø650 mm (25.6 in). Twelve tools sit on a servo turret that indexes to the opposite station in 0.5 seconds by Goodway's figure.

Five variations are offered. A 12-station ER32 live tooling turret (10 ~ 4,000 rpm) and C-axis make up the M version. The Y version adds 110 mm (4.3 in) of Y travel, ±55 mm, with turning diameter reduced to Ø340 mm (13.4 in). S, MS and YS add a 6 in sub-spindle rated 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) continuous and 7.5 kW (10 HP) for 30 min., running 60 ~ 6,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • αP series wide-range spindle motor that reaches full output at half the rpm of a standard motor, per Goodway
  • Box ways on a 30° slant bed
  • Optional Y-axis with 110 mm (4.3 in) of travel
  • Optional 6 in sub-spindle rated 7.5 kW (10 HP) for 30 min. at up to 6,000 rpm
  • Z travel of 600 mm (23.6 in) or 1,200 mm (47.2 in)

Limitations

  • Spindle motor is 11 kW (15 HP) continuous; the GS-2000 is rated 15 kW (20.1 hp) continuous
  • Turning diameter with the Y-axis is Ø340 mm (13.4 in)
  • Live tooling is limited to 4,000 rpm
  • The tailstock is marked optional in Goodway's table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the GS-200 a box-way or linear-guide lathe?

Box way. Goodway states that the box way design provides the rigidity needed for heavy duty and interrupted turning, and that the 30° slant bed gives a stable base for the turret and spindle.

02 What spindle motor does the GS-200 use?

An αP series wide-range motor rated 11 kW (15 HP) continuous and 15 kW (20 HP) on the 30 min. rating, with a 4,500 rpm maximum speed. Goodway says it reaches full horsepower at half the rpm of standard motors.

03 What does the GS-200 L add?

A longer bed. Z travel goes from 600 mm (23.6 in) to 1,200 mm (47.2 in) and maximum turning length from 590 mm (23.2 in) to 1,190 mm (46.9 in). Travel of the optional tailstock base goes from 470 mm (18.5 in) to 1,100 mm (43.3 in).

04 How does the GS-200 differ from the GS-280?

The GS-280 has a 10 in chuck, Ø75 mm (3.0 in) bar capacity and 3,500 rpm. The GS-200 has an 8 in chuck, Ø65 mm (2.6 in) bar capacity and 4,500 rpm. Motor, travels and options are common to both.
