Overview
The Mazak MEGA TURN 900M is the milling-equipped variant of the Mega Turn 900 vertical turning center, adding a dedicated milling spindle to the base VTL platform for true mill-turn capability on large-diameter workpieces. Where the standard 900 is a pure turning machine, the 900M allows drilling, tapping, contour milling, and off-center machining without moving heavy parts to a second machine — a significant advantage when workpieces weigh up to 3,000 kg (6,614 lb).
The vertical spindle orientation handles a maximum turning diameter of 920 mm (36.2 in) with 800 mm (31.5 in) of turning height and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of swing. The main turning drive delivers 30 kW (40 hp) at 40% ED with 3,655 Nm (2,696 ft-lb) of torque, supporting aggressive roughing cuts in cast iron, carbon steel, and alloy steel at material removal rates up to 960 cm³/min. Maximum spindle speed is 1,250 RPM, appropriate for the large-diameter work this machine targets.
The 12-station drum turret integrates a milling spindle that enables C-axis interpolation for polar coordinate milling, drilling patterns, and tapping operations directly on the vertical turning platform. This eliminates the crane move, refixturing, and datum pickup that would otherwise be required to transfer a 3,000 kg workpiece to a boring mill or machining center for secondary operations.
The MAZATROL SmoothG CNC provides conversational programming for both turning and milling operations, simplifying setup for operators who need to switch between pure turning cycles and mill-turn programs. Rapid traverse reaches 24 m/min on both X and Z axes. The 900M competes with the Okuma V920EX, DMG Mori CTV 400, and Doosan Puma V8300M. New machines price between $350,000 and $500,000 depending on milling spindle options and tooling configuration.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Integrated milling spindle eliminates the need to crane-transfer 3,000 kg workpieces to a separate machining center for drilling, tapping, and milling operations
- 3,655 Nm of spindle torque enables aggressive roughing in cast iron and steel with material removal rates up to 960 cm³/min on large-diameter parts
- Vertical spindle orientation uses gravity to naturally seat heavy workpieces in the chuck, simplifying loading and improving concentricity without complex fixturing
- C-axis interpolation supports polar coordinate milling, bolt-hole patterns, and contour milling directly on the VTL platform in a single setup
- 920 mm turning diameter with 1,000 mm swing handles large castings, forgings, and flanges common in energy, aerospace, and heavy equipment applications
- MAZATROL SmoothG conversational CNC simplifies programming for both turning and milling operations, reducing setup time for combined cycle programs
Limitations
- Milling spindle capability is limited compared to a dedicated machining center — suitable for drilling, tapping, and light milling but not heavy 3D contouring on hardened materials
- At 1,250 RPM maximum spindle speed, the 900M is restricted to large-diameter work and cannot efficiently turn small-diameter features at high surface speeds
- Vertical orientation requires overhead crane access for loading and unloading, adding infrastructure requirements for shops without existing crane coverage
- 12,500 kg machine weight requires substantial foundation preparation and limits placement flexibility within the shop floor

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The standard Mega Turn 900 is a 2-axis vertical turning center for pure turning operations. The 900M adds a milling spindle with C-axis interpolation, enabling drilling, tapping, and contour milling on the turned workpiece. This eliminates the need to crane-transfer heavy parts to a machining center for secondary operations. The 900M typically costs $50,000-$80,000 more than the base 900.
02
New MEGA TURN 900M machines start around $350,000 for standard configurations. Full configurations with high-pressure coolant, probing, chip conveyor upgrades, and automation integration can reach $450,000-$500,000. Used units from 2016-2022 trade between $175,000 and $325,000 depending on hours and condition.
03
The 900M milling spindle supports drilling, tapping, reaming, and contour milling via C-axis interpolation. It handles bolt-hole patterns, keyways, flats, and cross-drilling. However, it is not a substitute for a full machining center on heavy 3D contouring or high-speed aluminum milling. It is best suited for secondary operations that would otherwise require transferring a heavy workpiece to a separate machine.
04
Both are capable VTLs in the 900mm class with milling capability. The Mazak offers high torque and MAZATROL conversational control. The Okuma V920EX features the Thermo-Friendly Concept for thermal stability and the open-architecture OSP control. Selection typically comes down to control preference, existing fleet standardization, and local dealer support.
