Overview

The Goodway GA-3600/W24 is a single-purpose lathe: it turns aluminum wheels from 13 in to 24 in. Goodway takes its GA box-way platform, fits a 45 kW (60.3 hp) 15 min. spindle motor and a wheel chuck interface, and builds the machine around chip removal and fast loading.

Spindle ratings are the largest of any GA machine. The table lists 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous, 37 kW (49.6 hp) for 30 min. and 45 kW (60.3 hp) for 15 min., with 577 Nm (426 lb-ft) of maximum torque and 2,500 rpm. Aluminum wheel turning is a high-metal-removal job at high surface speed, and the short-term ratings are what the cycle uses.

Swing is Ø930 mm (36.6 in) and maximum turning diameter Ø680 mm (26.8 in). X travel is 400 mm (15.7 in), enough to face a 24 in wheel from rim to hub, and Z travel is 900 mm (35.4 in). A 10-station turret carries the tools, and Goodway supplies an anti-vibration tool holder for the finishing cuts that decide surface quality on a wheel face.

Goodway says cam arms and ring locators can be exchanged rapidly so that first and second operations are completed on the one machine, and it suggests pairing two of these lathes with a machining center and a robot arm as a production line. Chip handling gets a large chute, a high-capacity coolant tank and a chip conveyor; high-pressure coolant is optional. There is no tailstock, live tooling or bar capacity in the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What wheel sizes can the GA-3600/W24 machine?

Goodway lists wheel sizes from 13 in to 24 in. Maximum turning diameter is Ø680 mm (26.8 in) and swing Ø930 mm (36.6 in). Jaw-type hydraulic chucks are available for different wheel sizes and shapes, and Goodway offers customized chucks as well.

02 What spindle does the GA-3600/W24 have?

A 2,500 rpm spindle with three motor ratings: 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous, 37 kW (49.6 hp) for 30 min. and 45 kW (60.3 hp) for 15 min. Maximum spindle torque is 577 Nm (426 lb-ft).

03 Can one GA-3600/W24 do both wheel operations?

According to Goodway, yes. The cam arms and ring locators can be replaced rapidly so that the first and second operations are completed on the same machine. For volume production Goodway describes a line of two machines, a machining center and a robot arm.

04 How does the GA-3600/W24 differ from the standard GA-3600?

The GA-3600 is a general turning center with a 15 in chuck, Ø105 mm (4.1 in) bar capacity and Ø500 mm (19.7 in) of turning diameter. The GA-3600/W24 has no bar capacity figure, turns Ø680 mm (26.8 in), and has 400 mm (15.7 in) of X travel for wheel faces.
