Overview

The Goodway GLS-1500 takes a 6 in big-bore, 6,000 rpm linear-guideway lathe and offers it in six variations, from a plain two-axis machine to a Y-axis, sub-spindle turning center, plus a gang-tool version. Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (2.0 in), and the frame occupies about 4.5 m2 by Goodway's figure.

Two bed lengths are listed. Turning length and Z travel are both 330 mm (13.0 in) on the standard bed and 630 mm (24.8 in) on the L bed. Maximum turning diameter is Ø390 mm (15.4 in) and X travel 230 mm (9.1 in). The main motor is rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) continuous and 15 kW (20.1 hp) for 30 min.

What separates this model from the simpler GLS-150 is the option list. The Y variation gives 105 mm (4.1 in) of Y travel, ±52.5 mm about center, and with it the turning diameter drops to Ø310 mm (12.2 in). The S variations add a sub-spindle with a 5 in chuck and a built-in motor rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous, 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 5 min., at up to 6,000 rpm. Live tooling turrets come with 12 or 24 stations, take ER25 collets and run at 4,000 rpm.

The G variation is different in kind: it replaces the turret with gang type tool holders, which suits short parts where tool-to-tool time matters more than tool count. The standard turret has 12 or 10 stations. A tailstock with an MT#4 live center is optional, and Goodway notes it can also carry a deep hole drilling tool.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Six variations on one frame: M, Y, S, MS, YS and a gang-tool G version
  • 6,000 rpm spindle with Ø51 mm (2.0 in) bar capacity and an 11 kW (14.8 hp) continuous motor
  • Optional Y-axis with 105 mm (4.1 in) of travel
  • Optional sub-spindle running to 6,000 rpm for back-end work
  • Live tooling turrets with 12 or 24 stations

Limitations

  • With the Y-axis, turning diameter falls from Ø390 mm (15.4 in) to Ø310 mm (12.2 in)
  • The sub-spindle motor is small: 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous
  • Standard-bed turning length is 330 mm (13.0 in)
  • Tailstock, live tooling, Y-axis and sub-spindle are all options
06

Best For

Small complex parts finished on both ends with the YS variation Short bar parts on the gang-tool G variation Bar work up to Ø51 mm (2.0 in) at up to 6,000 rpm Shops that need Y-axis milling in a footprint of about 4.5 m2

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which variations of the GLS-1500 does Goodway offer?

Six besides the base lathe. M has a live tooling turret and C-axis. Y adds a Y-axis to that. S has a sub-spindle only. MS and YS combine the sub-spindle with the M and Y equipment. G uses a gang type tool holder in place of the turret.

02 How much Y-axis travel does the GLS-1500 have?

The optional Y-axis has 105 mm (4.1 in) of travel, which is ±52.5 mm from center. Maximum turning diameter with the Y-axis is Ø310 mm (12.2 in), compared with Ø390 mm (15.4 in) without it.

03 What is the sub-spindle on the GLS-1500 like?

Goodway describes a sub-spindle with a 5 in chuck driven by a built-in type motor. The table rates it at 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) continuous and 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) for 5 min., with a maximum speed of 6,000 rpm. It is intended for back-end machining after the part is picked off.

04 What is the difference between the GLS-1500 and the GLS-2000?

The spindle. The GLS-1500 has a 6 in big-bore chuck, Ø51 mm (2.0 in) bar capacity and 6,000 rpm. The GLS-2000 has an 8 in big-bore chuck, Ø65 mm (2.6 in) bar capacity and 4,500 rpm. Travels, motor ratings and options are shared.
