Overview

The Fryer SL-8 is a slant bed CNC turning center with an 8 in (203 mm) hydraulic chuck, a 12 in (305 mm) maximum turning diameter and a 12 station turret. It is the smallest of three SL models and the production lathe in a Fryer lineup otherwise dominated by flat-bed toolroom machines. The bed is a one piece casting slanted at 45°, with box ways.

Accuracy is the claim Fryer makes loudest for this series, and the table has figures to match: positioning accuracy of +/- 0.00010 in (0.0025 mm) and repeatability of +/- 0.00005 in (0.0013 mm), half the tolerance band listed for the ET toolroom lathes. The spindle runs in P4 NN roller bearings. For bearing fits, hydraulic spools and other diameters held to tenths, that is the row to compare.

Bar work is the natural job. The spindle bore is 2.4 in (61 mm) and bar capacity 2.0 in (51 mm), with 3.0 in (76 mm) through the big bore option, which also changes the nose from A2-6 to A2-8. Top speed is 4,200 rpm with 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak, the turret indexes in 1 second per tool, and rapids are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min). A magazine bar feeder and an automatic parts catcher are on the options sheet.

Standard working length is 16 in (406 mm), short even for a chucker; Z travel can be extended to 24" or 46". With the live tool turret and 'C' axis options the machine also mills and drills. It weighs 11,500 lb (5,216 kg) and occupies 90 x 69 in (2,286 x 1,753 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the capacities of the Fryer SL-8?

Swing over the bed is 20 in (508 mm), maximum turning diameter 12 in (305 mm) and standard working length 16 in (406 mm). The hydraulic chuck is 8 in (203 mm), with 10 in (254 mm) optional, the spindle bore is 2.4 in (61 mm) and bar capacity is 2.0 in (51 mm).

02 How accurate is the SL-8?

Fryer's table gives positioning accuracy of +/- 0.00010 in (0.0025 mm) and positioning repeatability of +/- 0.00005 in (0.0013 mm). The series page lists P4 NN roller spindle bearings, box way construction and a 45° one piece slant bed.

03 Can the Z travel of the SL-8 be extended?

Yes. Standard Z travel is 16 in (406 mm). The options sheet lists extended Z travel to 24" for the SL-8 and to 46" for the SL-8, SL-10 and SL-12. The specification table shows the matching distances between centers of 19 in (483 mm), 27 in (686 mm) and 51 in (1,295 mm).

04 What turret does the SL-8 have?

A 12 position turret for 1 in (25 mm) bolt-on tooling, with VDI-30 or BMT-45 as alternatives. A 12 station live tool turret in VDI-30 or BMT-45 with a 10 HP live tool spindle motor is listed for the SL-8, as is a Y axis live tool turret.
