Overview

The Johnford ST-40C is a short, heavy chucker: a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck and an A2-15 spindle on a bed with just 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel.

One detail of the table deserves attention before anything else. The optional chuck is 610 mm (24 in), and the swing over the cross slide is 600 mm (23.6 in). A chuck that size clears the bed, which swings 790 mm (31.1 in), but the carriage cannot pass under it, so tool reach and jaw positions have to be worked out with that in mind.

The C spindle has a 152 mm (6 in) bore, 139 mm (5.5 in) of bar capacity and a 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing diameter. Standard power is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), with 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option. With the belt-type gearbox it runs to 1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm in the optional version; a geared headstock is also listed, at 1,200 rpm.

On so short a bed the tailstock, with 500 mm (19.7 in) of travel, is secondary. This is a machine for rings, discs, couplings and other parts whose diameter is greater than their length. It weighs 11,150 kg (24,530 lb), against 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) for the ST-40A.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the ST-40C use a 24 in chuck?

A 610 mm (24 in) chuck is the listed option. Swing over the bed is 790 mm (31.1 in), so it fits, but swing over the cross slide is 600 mm (23.6 in), which is less than the chuck diameter.

02 What spindle speeds does the ST-40C offer?

With the belt type gear box, 1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm as the option. With the geared headstock, 1,200 rpm. The transmission has four automatic speeds.

03 How does the ST-40C compare with the ST-40B?

The ST-40B has a 381 mm (15 in) chuck, a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 2,000 rpm and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) as standard. The ST-40C moves to a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck, a 152 mm (6 in) bore, 1,500 rpm and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp).

04 What does the ST-40C weigh?

11,150 kg (24,530 lb), on outside dimensions of 5,132 x 2,270 x 2,765 mm (202 x 89.4 x 108.9 in). The bed is inclined at 60°.
