Overview

The Shibaura Machine TUE-200(S) is the largest of the three TUE wall-column vertical boring and turning mills, with a 2,000 mm (78.74 in) diameter table that carries 15,000 kg (33,070 lb). Maximum swing is 2,400 mm (94.48 in) and maximum cutting height is 1,550 mm (61 in). The (S) version has a live spindle for milling and drilling.

Weight capacity is the reason to choose it. The TUE-150(S) also swings 2,000 mm (78.74 in) but is rated for 8,000 kg (17,600 lb), so a dense part that fits the smaller machine by diameter can still need this one by weight. Solid forgings, thick-walled rings and steel castings are the typical cases.

The table drive is AC 45/37 kW (60/50 hp), rated 30 min/continuous, across a 2-240 rpm range. A low top speed suits the diameters involved, because at the rim of a 2,000 mm table modest rpm already gives a high surface speed. The consequence is that small-diameter features near the centre are turned below their ideal surface speed and are often better milled.

For that there is the live spindle: 15-3,000 rpm, AC 18.5/15 kW (24.6/20 hp) and 223 Nm (172 lbf-ft) on a 7/24 taper No. 50. The C axis positions at 720 deg/min and feeds at 360 deg/min. The ram travels -50 to 1,350 mm (-1.97 to 53.15 in) in X, barely past the table centre, and 900 mm (35.43 in) in Z, while the crossrail adds 1,000 mm (39.37 in) of vertical setting that is not an NC axis. Rapids are 15,000 mm/min (590.55 ipm) in X and 12,000 mm/min (472.4 ipm) in Z.

Plan the installation early. The machine is 5,525 mm (217.5 in) high, 6,420 mm (252.8 in) wide and 4,390 mm (172.8 in) deep, and a 15,000 kg workpiece has to be lowered onto the table from above, so crane capacity and hook height belong in the first conversation. Tool capacity is 18 tools and the control is the FANUC 0i-TF.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 15,000 kg (33,070 lb) table load on a 2,000 mm (78.74 in) diameter table
  • Maximum swing of 2,400 mm (94.48 in) with 1,550 mm (61 in) of cutting height
  • AC 45/37 kW (60/50 hp) table drive
  • Live spindle with 223 Nm (172 lbf-ft) and 15-3,000 rpm on a 7/24 taper No. 50
  • Rapid traverse of 15,000 mm/min (590.55 ipm) in X and 12,000 mm/min (472.4 ipm) in Z

Limitations

  • Table speed is 2-240 rpm, low for turning small diameters
  • X travel goes only 50 mm (1.97 in) beyond the table centre
  • The 1,000 mm (39.37 in) crossrail travel is a setting, not an NC axis
  • 18 tools is a small magazine for long cycles on large parts that combine turning and milling
  • Needs a building that clears 5,525 mm (217.5 in) of machine height plus crane travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How heavy a workpiece can the TUE-200(S) take?

The table is rated for 15,000 kg (33,070 lb), fixture included. It is 2,000 mm (78.74 in) in diameter, maximum swing is 2,400 mm (94.48 in) and maximum cutting height is 1,550 mm (61 in). The TUE-150(S) is rated for 8,000 kg (17,600 lb), so weight is the main reason to step up.

02 Is 240 rpm enough table speed?

For large diameters, yes. The listed range is 2-240 rpm, and surface speed rises with diameter, so the outer part of a 2,000 mm (78.74 in) table reaches high cutting speeds at low rpm. Small bores and hubs near the centre are the weak spot. The 15-3,000 rpm live spindle can mill or bore those features instead.

03 What are the dimensions of the TUE-200(S)?

Shibaura Machine lists 5,525 x 6,420 x 4,390 mm (217.5 x 252.8 x 172.8 in) as height, width and depth. No machine weight is listed. With a 15,000 kg (33,070 lb) table load on top of the machine itself, the foundation loading should be requested with the layout.

04 Can the TUE-200(S) mill and drill as well as turn?

Yes, that is what the (S) version adds. The live spindle runs 15-3,000 rpm with AC 18.5/15 kW (24.6/20 hp) and 223 Nm (172 lbf-ft), and takes 7/24 taper No. 50 tools. The C axis rapids at 720 deg/min and cuts at up to 360 deg/min. All tools share an 18-tool magazine.

05 How does the ram move on the TUE-200(S)?

The ram travels -50 to 1,350 mm (-1.97 to 53.15 in) horizontally in X and 900 mm (35.43 in) vertically in Z. The crossrail carrying it can be set over a further 1,000 mm (39.37 in) of height, but that movement is not an NC axis. Cutting feed is 2,000 mm/min (78.74 ipm) in X and Z.
