Overview

Up to five metres of vertical travel: the Emco Mecmill Plus is the tallest machine Emco lists, with a vertical axis of 4000 - 5000 mm, a longitudinal axis of 6000 - 16000 mm and a cross axis of 1600 - 1850 mm.

Height like that puts heavy demands on the ram. A head working near the top of the column is a long way from the bed, and every bit of ram droop shows up in the part. Emco answers with a larger ram, 550 x 600 mm, a box-in-box column and a patented ram balancing system that compensates the weight of the extended ram. The feed rate is 25 m/min (984 ipm), slightly lower than on the Mecmill, which is the usual consequence of more moving mass.

The head programme goes further too. The universal head is listed with 38 / 57 kW - 50 / 61 kW and 1000 / 1500 Nm - 1500 / 1800 Nm; the second pair is a stronger head that runs at the lower of the two speed ranges in 15 ÷ 6000 rpm - 15 ÷ 5000 rpm. For five-axis finishing there are fork-type heads with a 25° undercut and high-speed spindles up to 24,000 rpm.

Storage is sized to match: 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 203 pockets for tools and 2 / 3 / 4 pockets for heads. The spindle motor in the brochure is 40 kW 1200 Nm, and coolant through the spindle is 20 l/min, 20/40/60/80 bar. Controls are Heidenhain TNC7 / Siemens Sinumerik One.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Vertical travel of 4000 - 5000 mm
  • Ram of 550 x 600 mm with patented balancing system
  • Universal head torque up to the second pair in 1000 / 1500 Nm - 1500 / 1800 Nm
  • Fork-type heads with 25° undercut and 24,000 rpm
  • Up to 203 tool pockets and a head magazine of 2 / 3 / 4 pockets

Limitations

  • Feed rate of 25 m/min (984 ipm) is below the 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) of the Mecmill
  • The stronger universal head is limited to the lower range in 15 ÷ 6000 rpm - 15 ÷ 5000 rpm
  • Building height and crane clearance must suit a machine with this vertical travel
  • Starts at 6000 mm of longitudinal travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How tall a part can the Mecmill Plus machine?

Vertical axis travel is 4000 - 5000 mm. Longitudinal travel is 6000 - 16000 mm and cross travel 1600 - 1850 mm, with a ram of 550 x 600 mm.

02 What head options does the Mecmill Plus have?

The universal milling head is listed with 38 / 57 kW - 50 / 61 kW and 1000 / 1500 Nm - 1500 / 1800 Nm at 15 ÷ 6000 rpm - 15 ÷ 5000 rpm. Fork-type heads with high-speed spindle reach 24,000 rpm, and a milling head with offset spindle runs at 3,000 rpm.

03 How many tools and heads can it store?

The automatic tool magazine is listed with 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 203 pockets and the automatic head magazine with 2 / 3 / 4 pockets. Emco describes the larger tool store as an automatic tower tool changer.

04 Which controls are available?

The brochure names Heidenhain TNC7 / Siemens Sinumerik One. Machine configuration follows the customer's requirement, so the control is one of several items fixed at the order stage.
