Overview

Three tool carriers can cut at the same time on the Emco Hyperturn 65 Powermill High Performance: a milling spindle with B and Y axis on top, and two tool turrets underneath, each with its own X, Y and Z axes. The turret row reads 2x12 (2x16), and Emco puts the maximum at 24 driven tools in the lower tool system.

This is a machine for cycle time. With one turret at each spindle and the milling spindle free to work wherever it is needed, a part can be turned on the main spindle, picked up, and finished on the counter spindle with three tools in the cut. The travel rows show how the axes are divided: X is X1/X2/X4 405/210/210 mm, Y is Y1/Y2/Y4 220/100/100 mm and Z is Z1/Z2/Z4 1040/850/600 mm. Each row carries three values, one per axis group, so every tool carrier moves on slides of its own.

The milling spindle changes tools from a 40-tool HSK-T63 magazine. The turrets are BMT55P (BMT45P), with driven tools at 0-12000 rpm, 11.7 (11.7) kW and 28 (25) Nm.

Main and counter spindle come in three sizes, ø65, ø76,2 and ø95 mm in Emco's words, with the bar row reading 65 (76.2/95) mm. Main spindle power is 29 (29/37) kW and torque 250 (250/360) Nm on a nose of A2-6 (A2-8); the counter spindle stays at 29 (29/29) kW. A finished part unloading device and a coolant unit with belt filter are on the equipment list. The machine weighs 13,500 kg (29,762 lb) and measures 5,253 x 3,200 x 2,375 mm (206.8 x 126.0 x 93.5 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling spindle plus two lower turrets, each turret on its own X/Y/Z axes
  • Up to 24 driven tools in the lower tool system, at 0-12000 rpm
  • Three spindle sizes with bar capacity of 65 (76.2/95) mm
  • 40-fold HSK-T63 tool magazine for the milling spindle
  • Finished part unloading device and belt-filter coolant unit listed as equipment

Limitations

  • The magazine is listed with 40 tools; the Hyperturn 65 Powermill G2 offers up to 120
  • Two of the three Y axes are limited to 100 mm of travel (the Y row reads Y1/Y2/Y4 220/100/100 mm)
  • Three-channel programming and proving-out take time, which suits long runs better than one-offs
  • At 3200 mm wide it needs more depth than the G2
