Overview

The Emco Mecmill is a large travelling-column machine with a cross axis: the column moves 6000 - 16000 mm along the bed and 1,600 mm (63.0 in) across it, and the head climbs 3500 - 4000 mm. It works in 3+2 axes as standard, with heads for 5 continuous axes available.

Emco describes the layout as a cross axis and a moving column in box-in-box design, which sets it apart from the horizontal-ram Ecomill models. The ram has a section of 500 x 500 mm. A square, fully enclosed ram of that size resists both bending and twist when it is extended, and on tall parts that keeps the cut more consistent from the bottom of the vertical travel to the top.

The spindle motor is 40 kW 1200 Nm. At the universal head the brochure lists 38 / 57 kW and 1000 / 1500 Nm at 15 ÷ 6000 rpm. That is roughing torque for big face mills and long boring tools. High-speed spindles handle the finishing, among them 45 / 58 kW, 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6), 12000 rpm, HSK 100-A and 42 / 55 kW, 67 / 87.5 Nm (S1 / S6), 24000 rpm, HSK 63-A, and fork-type heads reach 24,000 rpm.

Heads change from a magazine with 2 / 3 / 4 pockets, and tools from one with 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 203 pockets. Feed rate is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm), through-spindle coolant 20 l/min, 20/40/60/80 bar. The controls named are Heidenhain TNC7 / Siemens Sinumerik One.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Vertical travel of 3500 - 4000 mm with 6000 - 16000 mm longitudinally
  • Cross axis of 1,600 mm (63.0 in) moving the whole column
  • Universal head with 1000 / 1500 Nm
  • Head magazine with 2 / 3 / 4 pockets
  • Tool magazine of 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 203 pockets

Limitations

  • The smallest version already has 6000 mm of longitudinal travel
  • Universal head speed is 15 ÷ 6000 rpm; finishing needs a high-speed spindle
  • The Mecmill Plus offers more vertical travel and a larger ram
  • The brochure prints two technical tables that differ in details such as coolant pressure and magazine size
