Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer HB-70 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer HB-70 is a table-type horizontal boring mill with a moving quill: 70 x 50 x 36 in (1,778 x 1,270 x 914 mm) of X, Y and Z travel plus a 4.330 in (110 mm) boring bar that feeds 20 in (508 mm) on a fully programmable W axis. It shares its 36 x 80 in (914 x 2,032 mm) table and 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) load rating with the fixed spindle HR-70.
The bar is what separates the two. On the HR-70 the spindle nose stays in the head, so a deep bore needs a long, overhung tool. On the HB-70 the bar itself travels into the part, keeping the tool short and supported, and W can be programmed together with Z. Reaching inside a housing, boring two in-line seats from one side and back-facing through a bore are the typical uses.
The drive is tuned for that work. Spindle speed is 30 - 3,000 rpm, half the top speed of the HR-70, with 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak and 360 ft-lb (488 Nm) at 350 rpm. Fryer's table gives 1,400 ft-lb (1,898 Nm) with the optional 2-speed gearbox. Coolant through the spindle is listed as standard on this series.
Around the bar it is a complete machining center: a 24 station arm type changer for CAT 50 or BT-50 tools up to 33.0 lb, 750 ipm (19.1 m/min) rapids and a built-in rotary table option. For the HB-70 Fryer lists a 36" built-in table and a rectangular 60" x 48" table. The machine weighs 38,000 lb (17,237 kg) and needs 195 x 159 in (4,953 x 4,039 mm) of floor.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It is the travel of the boring bar. The bar is 4.330 in (110 mm) in diameter, carries a 50 taper and moves 20 in (508 mm) as a fully programmable W axis, in addition to 36 in (914 mm) of Z travel. An optional sag compensation function adjusts the Y axis position relative to the W axis position.
02
The HR-70 has a fixed spindle at 60 - 6,000 rpm with 306 ft-lb (415 Nm) and 55 in (1,397 mm) of Y. The HB-70 has a moving bar spindle at 30 - 3,000 rpm with 360 ft-lb (488 Nm), a 20 in (508 mm) W axis and 50 in (1,270 mm) of Y. Table size and table load are the same.
