Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Ecoca SL-8 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Ecoca SL-8 is a compact linear-guide turning center with an 8 in (203 mm) chuck, 320 mm (12.6 in) of maximum turning diameter and 480 mm (18.9 in) of turning length. Where the MT lathes of similar chuck size run on box ways, the SL series is built on linear guideways on both axes, which Ecoca says reduce machining time and increase accuracy.
That choice sets the character of the machine. Linear guides have low friction, so axes accelerate quickly and position without stick-slip, and short cycle times on light and medium cuts are the benefit. What they do not offer is the damping of a scraped box way under a heavy interrupted cut. For bar-sized parts in free-machining steel, aluminium or brass the SL-8 is the natural fit; for hard, intermittent roughing the MT-108 is the alternative with the same chuck.
It is also one of the few Ecoca pages that names its drive supplier. The description states that the series employs FANUC β series spindle and axial servo motors. The spindle motor is listed as 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp), noticeably more than the 7.5/11 kW (10.1/14.8 hp) of the MT-108, with a top speed of 4,500 rpm.
The turret has 10 stations. Swing over the bed is 420 mm (16.5 in) and swing over the cross slide 350 mm (13.8 in), on a bed slanted at 30 degree. At 3,350 kg (7,385 lb) the machine is easy to place. A hydraulic tailstock, live center, coolant system and heat exchanger are among the standard accessories.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Linear guideways on both axes, which Ecoca credits with shorter machining time and better accuracy
- FANUC β series spindle and axis servo motors, as stated in the series description
- 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp) spindle motor with 4,500 rpm on an 8 in (203 mm) chuck
- 480 mm (18.9 in) turning length, longer than the 260 mm (10.2 in) of the MT-108
- Light at 3,350 kg (7,385 lb)
Limitations
- Maximum turning diameter is 320 mm (12.6 in), smaller than the 380 mm (15.0 in) of the MT-108
- Linear guides give less damping than box ways in heavy interrupted cuts
- 10 tool stations; 12 are available on the SL-8MC
- One bed length only, with no spindle bore or bar capacity published

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Linear guideways on both axes. The guideways row of the table reads LINEAR, and Ecoca's description says they are used to reduce machining time and increase accuracy. The bed is a 30 degree slant design for turning stability and easy chip removal.
02
Ecoca states that the SL series employs FANUC β series spindle and axial servo motors. The spindle drive motor is listed as 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp) and the spindle speed as 4,500 rpm. The page does not name the CNC control model.
03
Maximum turning diameter is 320 mm (12.6 in) and maximum turning length is 480 mm (18.9 in). Swing over the bed is 420 mm (16.5 in) and swing over the cross slide is 350 mm (13.8 in). The chuck size is 8 in (203 mm).

The SL-10 has a 10 in (254 mm) chuck, 4,200 rpm and 460 mm (18.1 in) of turning length, and weighs 3,450 kg (7,606 lb). The SL-8 has an 8 in (203 mm) chuck, 4,500 rpm and 480 mm (18.9 in), and weighs 3,350 kg (7,385 lb). Motor, swing and turning diameter are the same.
