Overview

With 1,430 mm (56.3 in) between centers, the Ecoca EL-4615 is the long version of Ecoca's flat bed CNC lathe. The headstock end is unchanged from the EL-4610: a 460 mm (18.1 in) swing over the bed, a 225 mm (8.9 in) center height, a D1-6 spindle nose and a 9 kW (12.1 hp) spindle motor. The extra bed adds weight, and the EL-4615 comes to 2,470 kg (5,445 lb).

Length changes what the machine is asked to do. A shaft approaching a metre and a half is a slender workpiece on a 460 mm (18.1 in) swing lathe, and it will deflect under the tool unless it is supported. The standard accessories include a tailstock center, and the flat bed gives room along the ways for work supports, but Ecoca's page lists no steady rest or follow rest. Ask what is available if long, thin parts are the reason for buying the longer bed.

Swing over the cross slide is 258 mm (10.2 in), and that figure, not the swing over the bed, limits the diameter of any shaft that has to pass over the carriage. For long work it is the number to check first.

The spindle runs through 275~2,000 rpm as standard, and a 415~3,000 rpm range is listed as an option. Ecoca's description of the series applies in full: a one piece cast base for maximum stiffness and vibration damping, AC servo motors with precision ball screws on both axes, and a separate coolant tank with a removable chip tank so the operator can clean out coolant and chips. Ecoca says the machine is suitable for big and long work pieces, and this is the model in the pair that the phrase fits best.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,430 mm (56.3 in) between centers, against 930 mm (36.6 in) on the EL-4610
  • Same 460 mm (18.1 in) swing and D1-6 spindle nose as the shorter model, so chucks and fixtures interchange
  • One piece cast base, described by Ecoca as built for maximum stiffness and vibration damping
  • Servo motors and ball screws on both axes; tailstock center included

Limitations

  • Swing over the cross slide is 258 mm (10.2 in), which caps the diameter of long shafts
  • No steady rest or follow rest appears on the accessories list
  • 9 kW (12.1 hp) spindle; the faster 415~3,000 rpm range is optional
  • Heavier than the EL-4610, at 2,470 kg (5,445 lb) against 1,850 kg (4,078 lb)

Best For

Long shafts, spindles and rollers up to 1,430 mm (56.3 in) between centers Maintenance shops that repair long parts Short batches of long turned parts programmed at the machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a workpiece does the Ecoca EL-4615 take?

The distance between centers is 1,430 mm (56.3 in). Swing over the bed is 460 mm (18.1 in), and swing over the cross slide is 258 mm (10.2 in), which is the limit for any diameter that must pass over the carriage.

02 What is the difference between the EL-4615 and the EL-4610?

Bed length and weight. The EL-4615 has 1,430 mm (56.3 in) between centers and weighs 2,470 kg (5,445 lb). The EL-4610 has 930 mm (36.6 in) and weighs 1,850 kg (4,078 lb). Swing, center height, spindle motor, speed range and spindle nose are the same in both columns.

03 Does the EL-4615 come with a steady rest?

The standard accessories list does not include one. It names a tailstock center, spindle center bush, interlocked safety guard, coolant system, automatic slide way lubrication, machine light, tool kit and operation manual. Ask Ecoca about steady and follow rests for slender work.

04 What spindle does the EL-4615 have?

A D1-6 spindle nose driven by a 9 kW (12.1 hp) motor. The standard speed range is 275~2,000 rpm, and Ecoca lists 415~3,000 rpm as an option. No spindle bore figure is given in the table.
