Overview
The DMG Mori DMU 60 eVo is a mid-size 5-axis universal machining center that delivers simultaneous 5-axis milling in a versatile trunnion table configuration. As the step-up model from the DMU 40 eVo, it provides a larger working envelope — 600 x 500 x 500 mm — and a 630 mm diameter swivel rotary table capable of carrying workpieces up to 630 kg, making it one of the most widely deployed 5-axis platforms in aerospace, energy, and precision engineering.
The machine's trunnion table tilts from −5° to +110° and rotates continuously, allowing full five-sided access to complex parts without reclamping. Combined with the optional high-speed spindle at up to 18,000 rpm, the DMU 60 eVo achieves exceptional surface quality on contoured aerodynamic surfaces, mold cavities, and structural aerospace brackets. The spindle features a direct-drive motor for maximum stiffness and thermal stability.
Constructed on a thermosymmetric cast iron column and base, the DMU 60 eVo maintains geometric accuracy over extended production periods. The optional Thermo Shield system actively compensates for thermal drift by continuously measuring critical structural temperatures and applying correction values to the control — a feature that distinguishes it from competitors at similar price points.
With Siemens SINUMERIK ONE and DMG Mori CELOS, the DMU 60 eVo provides full digital twin functionality, allowing complete offline simulation and verification of complex 5-axis toolpaths. Automation-ready with pallet changer and robot loading options, it is suitable for both low-volume prototype work and medium-volume production cells.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Larger 630 mm swivel table and 630 kg load capacity handles a wider range of workpiece sizes than the DMU 40 eVo
- Thermo Shield active thermal compensation maintains accuracy during long production runs
- 25 kW spindle provides strong torque for productive cuts in titanium and hardened steel
- Full SINUMERIK ONE digital twin support reduces programming time and first-article risk
- Versatile automation options (pallet changer, robot loading) enable flexible production cell configuration
Limitations
- Higher cost than the DMU 40 eVo — not justified if workpiece sizes consistently fit within the smaller machine's envelope
- Large footprint (3,400 x 3,200 mm) requires significant floor area in the machine shop
- Like all high-end 5-axis centers, full utilization of simultaneous interpolation requires advanced CAM skills

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Thermo Shield is DMG Mori's active thermal compensation system. Sensors embedded in the machine's structural components continuously measure temperature gradients, and the SINUMERIK ONE control applies real-time correction offsets to maintain geometric accuracy even as the machine and workshop temperature fluctuate during the day.
02
Yes. With the optional 2- or 6-pallet changer and appropriate tooling management, the DMU 60 eVo can run through multiple part programs unattended. The machine includes broken tool detection and can be configured to pause or alert if a tool life limit is reached.
03
The standard tool magazine accommodates tools up to approximately 300 mm in length and 100 mm in diameter (with adjacent pocket empty). DMG Mori's application team can specify exact limits for specific tooling configurations.
04
Yes, with the appropriate graphite machining package (enclosed chip management, anti-static measures, filtered coolant/air system), the DMU 60 eVo is capable of graphite electrode production. The optional high-speed spindle at 18,000 rpm is preferred for fine surface finish on graphite.
05
The DMU 65 monoBLOCK is a heavier, more rigid platform designed for higher cutting forces and roughing operations in steel and titanium. The DMU 60 eVo in the eVo series prioritizes a balance of flexibility, speed, and footprint efficiency. The monoBLOCK series is better suited to heavy aerospace work; the eVo is a more versatile production platform.
