Overview
The CMS Poseidon is a 5-axis machining center built in a long list of X lengths: CMS's table gives nineteen steps of X travel from 2,5 m to 41.5 m. Rapids are 85 m/min in X and Y and 45 m/min in Z, and spindle power is listed from 12 to 32 kW.
That X list is the reason to look at this machine. The shortest lengths, 2,5 m, 4 m, 5 m and 6 m, overlap with the Ares, which stops at 6000 mm, while the upper end of 36.5 m, 39 m and 41.5 m is far outside what the Ares or the Athena cover. The table gives no Y or Z travel, though it does give Y and Z rapid rates, so the cross travel and vertical stroke have to be specified with CMS for each machine.
The rotary strokes depend on which of three variants is chosen, PX5, HX5 or KX5, and the table does not explain the codes. A is +/-120° on the PX5 and HX5 and +/-110° on the KX5. C is +/-270° on the PX5, +/-245° on the HX5 and +/-300° on the KX5. Both rotary axes rapid at 9000°/min. The KX5 therefore gives the most C rotation and the least A tilt, and the HX5 the least C rotation.
Spindle power from 12 to 32 kW is a range, not a rating for one spindle. Speeds, torque and tapers are not in the table, so the spindle has to be chosen with the same care as the length.
