Price estimate
We do not have a price for the CMS MX5 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The CMS MX5 is an open frame, moving bridge machining center offered in more than 80 sizes. Its Y travel is wide, 3,600 mm (141.7 in) or 4,250 mm (167.3 in), and the X strokes in the table run from 2350 up to 18500 mm.
Read the rapids before comparing it with faster gantries. The Y axis reaches up to 72 m/min and Z up to 44 m/min, but X, the long axis that carries the whole bridge, is listed at up to 38 m/min. On a long part the machine covers distance at that lower rate, which suits milling and shaping of large patterns and moulds more than high-speed trimming.
Four Z strokes are available, from 900 mm (35.4 in) to 2,500 mm (98.4 in), so the same design covers flat panels and tall plugs. Six working units are listed. The 5-axis heads are the CX5 with 8.5 kW (S1), the PX5 with 12 kW (S1) or 15 kW (S1), and the KX5 with 18 kW (S1); the range of the rotary axes depends on which is fitted, with C at ± 360° on the CX5, ± 270° on the PX5 and ± 300° on the KX5. Two synchronous 3-axis units, PX3 with 20 kW (S1) and KX3 with 32 kW (S1) and 68 Nm, cover heavier cutting.
CMS also builds the machine with a monobloc structure (MB) or with guides on the ground (GT), the latter giving access on all sides for loading large workpieces. In open frame form it can be fitted with bellows covers and suction inlets.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- More than 80 sizes, with X strokes up to 18500 mm
- Y strokes of 3,600 mm (141.7 in) or 4,250 mm (167.3 in)
- Z strokes up to 2,500 mm (98.4 in) for tall plugs and moulds
- Six working units from 8.5 kW (S1) to 32 kW (S1), 3-axis and 5-axis
- Open frame, monobloc (MB) and ground rail (GT) structures
Limitations
- X-axis rapid is up to 38 m/min, well below the Y-axis figure of up to 72 m/min
- The 32 kW (S1) and 20 kW (S1) units are 3-axis synchronous spindles, not 5-axis heads
- The largest 5-axis unit, the KX5, is limited to ± 110° in A
- No tool magazine data is listed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
CMS states more than 80 sizes. The table lists X strokes of 2350 - 3000 - 4350 - 5000 - 7000 - 8500 - 10500 - 12500 - 14500 - 16500 - 18500 mm, Y strokes of 3,600 mm (141.7 in) or 4,250 mm (167.3 in), and Z strokes of 900 mm (35.4 in), 1,400 mm (55.1 in), 2,000 mm (78.7 in) or 2,500 mm (98.4 in).
02
Rapids are up to 38 m/min in X, up to 72 m/min in Y and up to 44 m/min in Z. The A and C axes move at 9000°/min.
03
Six are listed: CX5 with 8.5 kW (S1), PX5 with 12 kW (S1) or 15 kW (S1), PX3 synchronous with 20 kW (S1), KX5 with 18 kW (S1) and KX3 synchronous with 32 kW (S1). Tool holders are HSK63F, HSK63A or HSK63E depending on the unit, and all are liquid cooled.
04
CMS offers the mx with a monobloc structure (MB) or with guides on ground (GT, Ground Rail) as alternatives to the open frame. The GT version gives access on all sides, including loading on the longer side of large workpieces.
