Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Campbell Grinder 800A400 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Campbell Grinder 800A400 is the smallest of Campbell's 800 series CNC creep feed grinders, with a 400 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 in) table, a part height of 400 mm (15.7 in) and a grinding spindle that runs from 0 to 3,600 RPM. It has three linear axes, X, Y and Z.
The layout is what distinguishes the series. It is a traveling column machine in which a Y axis ram travels on the Z axis while the workpiece stays still. Because the part does not move, the fixture, its hydraulics and the coolant delivery stay in one place, and the machine needs less floor than a design with a long reciprocating table. Campbell states that the configuration allows a small machine footprint.
It also lets all three guideway members be large closed-box sections, which is where the stiffness needed for creep feed grinding comes from. The axes run on precision roller ways with direct feedback from scales, and Campbell gives each of X, Y and Z an accuracy of 5 microns (0.0002 in).
On this size the envelope is the limit, not the machine: fixtures have to fit a 400 x 300 mm table and a 400 mm height, where the next model, the 800A600, offers 600 x 350 mm (23.6 x 13.8 in) and 500 mm (19.7 in). Control is a FANUC CNC. Spindle power of up to 100 HP (74.6 kW) is listed as an option.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Traveling column with a stationary workpiece keeps fixtures and hydraulics fixed
- Closed-box guideway sections for grinding stiffness and geometric accuracy
- X, Y and Z accuracy of 5 microns (0.0002 in) with direct scale feedback
- Small footprint for a creep feed grinder, as Campbell states
Limitations
- Table is only 400 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 in) and part height 400 mm (15.7 in)
- Spindle speed ends at 3,600 RPM, where the 800A750 runs to 5,000 RPM
- Three linear axes only; the series table lists no rotary axis

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table is 400 x 300 mm (15.7 x 11.8 in) and the part height is 400 mm (15.7 in). Those are the smallest figures in the 800 series table; the 800A1000 at the other end has a 1,000 x 600 mm (39.4 x 23.6 in) table.
02
On the 800 series the column carries the grinding spindle through all three linear motions: a Y axis ram travels on the Z axis, and the workpiece is stationary. Campbell says this keeps the footprint small and lets the guideway members have a large closed-box cross section, which maximizes grinding stiffness and geometric accuracy.
03
The table lists a spindle speed range of 0 - 3,600 RPM for this version. The standard spindle is a direct motorized, liquid cooled grinding spindle. Campbell offers spindle power up to 100 HP (74.6 kW) and various RPM options, so the power is settled when the machine is ordered.
04
Each of the X, Y and Z axes is specified at 5 microns (0.0002 in). The axes run on precision roller ways, and the standard feature list includes direct feedback from scales on all axes.
