Overview

The Campbell Grinder CRG4000 is a heavy-duty CNC horizontal cylindrical OD grinder for long, heavy shafts: parts up to 1,000 mm (40 in) in diameter, grind lengths up to 5,080 mm (200 in) and part weights of 4,530 kg (10,000 lbs).

It is the one horizontal machine in a range of vertical grinders, and Campbell lists it among its custom machines. The machine has three main sections: a bed carrying the linear axes, a fixed headstock that rotates the part, and a tailstock. The headstock spindle is belt driven, and its speed and load are monitored on the control. The tailstock rides on roller guideways, is moved along the bed by rack and pinion and a hand wheel, and is clamped manually at the length of the part.

Campbell states an accuracy of 5 microns (0.0002 in) for each of the X, Y and Z axes. The axes have linear drives and absolute scales, and the least command increment of the Fanuc CNC is 0.0001 mm. The control stores 2 Mb of part programs, takes standard G-code and comes with a remote hand pendant.

The standard feature list is short: roller ways and linear scales on all axes, a single point dresser, an ID grinding spindle and a full enclosure. What turns it into a specific machine is the option list, which includes a B-axis spindle turret indexer, C-axis headstock positioning, a headstock mounted disk dresser, a wheel balancer, automatic steady rests, probing for part and wheel, and coolant filtration and chilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size shaft can the CRG4000 grind?

Up to 1,000 mm (40 in) in part diameter, up to 5,080 mm (200 in) in grind length and up to 4,530 kg (10,000 lbs) in part weight. Automatic steady rests are available as an option to support long parts against the forces of the grinding wheel.

02 How is the CRG4000 built?

In three main sections: a bed with the linear axes, a fixed headstock for part rotation and a tailstock. The headstock is belt driven. The tailstock is supported on a slide with roller guideways and is moved by a precision gear rack and pinion and a hand wheel, then locked with manual clamps.

03 What control does the CRG4000 use?

A Fanuc CNC. Campbell lists a least command increment of 0.0001 mm (0.00001 in) and 0.0001 degrees, 2 Mb of part program storage, custom macro and inch/metric conversion. A remote hand pendant is supplied.

04 How accurate is the CRG4000?

The catalogue gives 5 microns (0.0002 in) for the X axis, the Y axis and the Z axis. All axes have linear scales. Indicator tracks are supplied for taper measurements, and the tailstock is of a split design that allows taper adjustment during grinding.
