Overview

The Haas ST-30LY combines the long-bed Z-axis of the ST-30L with Y-axis and live tooling capability. It's the most versatile machine on the ST-30 platform: 1,016 mm (40 in) of turning length, +/-50.8 mm (+/-2.0 in) of Y-axis travel, and a 12-station BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling.

The A2-8 spindle delivers 22.4 kW (30 hp) and 407 Nm (300 ft-lb) of torque at 350 RPM, spinning up to 3,400 RPM. Max swing is 660 mm (26 in) with a 406 mm (16 in) cutting diameter. The 101.6 mm (4 in) drawtube bore handles large-diameter bar stock.

With the Y-axis and BMT-65 live tooling at 3.7 kW (5 hp) and 6,000 RPM, the ST-30LY can cross-drill, mill flats, cut keyways, and tap on long shafts without moving the part to a mill. For shops producing long parts with off-center features, this eliminates a second operation and the accuracy loss that comes with re-fixturing.

The NGC control handles the added complexity of Y-axis and C-axis programming without requiring specialized training beyond what any Haas operator already knows.

Priced at $115,000-$155,000 configured, the ST-30LY is a serious investment by Haas standards, but it's still $40-60K under comparable Mazak QT-300MSY or Okuma LB3000 EX II-MY long-bed machines. For shops that need Y-axis mill-turn on long parts, it's the value play in the segment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Combines 1,016 mm (40 in) Z-travel with Y-axis and live tooling — rare capability at this price
  • 22.4 kW (30 hp) and 407 Nm of torque handles heavy roughing on long shafts in steel and stainless
  • BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling eliminates second-op milling on long parts with cross features
  • 101.6 mm (4 in) bar capacity covers large-diameter production bar work
  • $40-60K cheaper than Mazak or Okuma long-bed Y-axis equivalents
  • NGC control consistency with the rest of the Haas lineup simplifies staffing

Limitations

  • 3.7 kW (5 hp) live tooling is modest for heavy milling operations on larger-diameter parts
  • No sub-spindle option limits done-in-one capability for back-end features
  • Large footprint — the long-bed plus Y-axis adds significant floor space requirements
  • 3,400 RPM max spindle speed can limit small-diameter aluminum finish turning
  • At $115-155K configured, it's approaching territory where shops consider Japanese alternatives

Best For

Long shaft production with off-center features like cross-holes, flats, keyways, and hex shapes Hydraulic cylinder and pump shaft manufacturers needing mill-turn on long parts Job shops that want one machine for long turning plus light milling instead of a lathe-and-mill pair Oil and gas component shops running large-diameter bar stock with cross-drilling requirements Shops already on the Haas platform looking for the most capable long-bed turning center in the lineup

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Haas ST-30LY cost?

Base price starts around $115,000. With live tooling package, tailstock, parts catcher, chip conveyor, and high-pressure coolant, expect $135,000-$155,000 configured. Used ST-30LY machines from 2019-2023 trade in the $55,000-$90,000 range depending on hours and options.

02 What is the difference between the ST-20LY and ST-30LY?

The ST-30LY has a larger spindle (A2-8 vs A2-6), 50% more torque (407 vs 203 Nm), bigger bar capacity (101.6 vs 63.5 mm), larger cutting diameter (406 vs 298 mm), and identical Z-axis travel at 1,016 mm. For larger diameter or heavier-cut work, the ST-30LY is the clear step up.

03 Can the ST-30LY replace a lathe and mill for long parts?

For turning with cross-drilling, flat milling, keyways, and tapping, yes. The Y-axis and 6,000 RPM live tooling handle most secondary operations. For heavy 3D milling, deep pocketing, or complex contour work, you'll still want a dedicated mill or mill-turn machine.

04 Is the ST-30LY suitable for heavy interrupted cuts?

The 407 Nm of torque and heavier ST-30 castings handle moderate interrupted cuts well. For truly aggressive interrupted turning in tough materials, the machine is capable but you may want to manage feed rates conservatively to protect the live tooling turret.
