Overview
Long shafts with milled features that sit off the centreline are the job of the Accuway UT-300LXY. It joins a 1,750 mm (68.9 in) Z travel to a Y axis of ±50 mm (±2.0 in) and a rotary-tool turret, and keeps a tailstock for support.
Maximum turning length is 1,540 mm (60.6 in) with the A2-8 spindles and 1,470 mm (57.9 in) with A2-11; maximum turning diameter is 420 mm (16.5 in). The tailstock body travels the same 1,540 mm (60.6 in), so the centre can follow the work anywhere along the bed. Its quill is 85 mm (3.3 in) in diameter, MT#5.
Why would a shaft need Y? A keyway cut with X and C alone has to be exactly as wide as the cutter. With Y the cutter can step sideways, so one end mill produces several keyway widths, and flats can be finished to size on both flanks. Splined or cross-drilled shafts with holes offset from the axis are programmed the same way. The live stations turn at 4,000 rpm on 3.7/5.5 kW (5.0/7.4 hp).
This is a large machine for its turning diameter: 5.4 x 2.5 x 2.4 m (212.6 x 98.4 x 94.5 in) and 7,800 kg (17,196 lb). Unlike the two-axis UT-300LX, its option list keeps the bar feeder and parts catcher and adds a gear box, and a steady rest is offered as well. The turret is a 12-station BMT/VDI type.
