Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Vollmer VPulse 500 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Vollmer VPulse 500 is a wire erosion machine for manufacturing and servicing PCD-tipped tools. It works with wire from 0.1 to 0.25 mm (0.004 to 0.010 in) and interpolates five CNC axes, so the wire can follow a profile around a rotating tool. Workpieces can be up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in diameter, up to 500 mm (19.7 in) long and up to 25 kg (55 lb).
Those limits come with conditions, and they are worth reading closely. Under automation the diameter drops to 300 mm (11.8 in) and the weight to 20 kg (44 lb). Between centres, using the optional counter point unit, the length is 420 mm (16.5 in). A long, slender reamer is exactly the tool that needs the counter point, so check its length against the smaller figure.
Wire erosion is the choice where a disc cannot reach: internal profiles, small radii, stepped tools with several PCD edges. Travel is 535 mm (21.1 in) in X, 300 mm (11.8 in) in Y and 195 mm (7.7 in) in Z, all at 85 mm/s. The A axis rotates through 360° at 90°/s – 15 rpm and the C axis covers 180° at 40°/s. Tools mount on an SK50 adapter system, and measurement and erosion share one clamping.
Three external stores are listed: HR for 16 workpieces, HC 5 for 28 and HC 11 for 64. The machine is operated from a height-adjustable, pivoting panel with a 19" touchscreen and programmed in ExProg. It draws 5 kVA and weighs approx. 4,100 kg (9,039 lb) net.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Wire diameters from 0.1 to 0.25 mm (0.004 to 0.010 in) for fine contours and internal profiles
- Long workpieces: up to 500 mm (19.7 in) unsupported clamping length in the table
- Simultaneous path interpolation in 5 CNC axes with measurement and erosion in one clamping
- Three workpiece stores to choose from, for 16, 28 or 64 workpieces
- Connected load of only 5 kVA
Limitations
- Automated loading reduces the limits to 300 mm (11.8 in) in diameter and 20 kg (44 lb)
- Between centres the workpiece length is 420 mm (16.5 in), not the full 500 mm (19.7 in)
- The counter point unit for machining between centres is an option
- Z travel is 195 mm (7.7 in), the shortest of the three linear axes
- External cooling and cleaning system is listed as optional

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in outside diameter, up to 500 mm (19.7 in) in length and up to 25 kg (55 lb). When loaded automatically the limits are 300 mm (11.8 in) and 20 kg (44 lb). For machining between points the length limit is 420 mm (16.5 in). The adapter system is SK50.
02
The table gives a wire diameter of 0.1 to 0.25 mm (0.004 to 0.010 in). The erosion generator is Vollmer's Vpulse EDM, which the maker says is used for wire erosion for the first time on this machine and comes with a technology database of preconfigured parameters.
03
Vollmer lists three external workpiece stores. HR holds 16 workpieces with a maximum load of 400 kg (882 lb). HC 5 holds 28 with a maximum load of 700 kg (1,543 lb). HC 11 holds 64 with a maximum load of 1,600 kg (3,527 lb). Automated workpieces may be up to 300 mm (11.8 in) in diameter and 20 kg (44 lb).
04
When the geometry needs a wire. The QXD 250 erodes with discs up to 200 mm (7.9 in) and also grinds, but its workpiece length ends at 250 mm (9.8 in). The VPulse 500 takes tools up to 500 mm (19.7 in) long and cuts with wire of 0.1 to 0.25 mm (0.004 to 0.010 in), which reaches internal profiles a disc cannot enter.
05
X1 travels 535 mm (21.1 in), Y1 300 mm (11.8 in) and Z1 195 mm (7.7 in), each at 85 mm/s. A1 rotates 360° at 90°/s – 15 rpm and C1 swivels 180° at 40°/s. The machine weighs approx. 4,100 kg (9,039 lb) net and needs 5 kVA.
