Overview
The Vollmer CHF 840 / CHF 1300 is the side grinder of Vollmer's CH workshop range. It grinds the tooth flanks of carbide-tipped circular saw blades, the operation that sets kerf width and side clearance, on blades from 80 to 840 mm (3.1 to 33.1 in) or from 80 to 1,300 mm (3.1 to 51.2 in) depending on the frame.
Side grinding used to mean setting two clearance angles by hand and hoping both flanks matched. Here five CNC axes (V1, Z1, X1, X2, Y1) set everything. Tangential clearance runs from 0° to 8° and radial clearance from 0° to 6°, entered as angles or as absolute values. The table adds a note on radial angles up to -20°, as found on conical prescoring saws: those are possible but may have to be ground one side at a time. Hook angles from -10° to +30° are accepted.
The wheels are small, 80 to 100 mm (3.1 to 3.9 in) on a 32 mm (1.3 in) bore. The standard grinding drive is 0.7 kW (0.9 hp); a 1.1 kW (1.5 hp) motor with variable speed is the option to pick for production use, and with it the wheel speed varies over approx. 18–27 m/s. Grinding path along the edge is up to 20 mm (0.79 in).
In daily use the helpful details are the ones that remove set-up. Tooth pitch is detected by the feed pawl. A saw can be changed without readjusting the mounting carriage. Convex flanks and flank offsets are programmable as standard through the multi-surface program. Connected load is approx. 3.7 kVA, and the machine weighs approx. 1,680 kg (3,704 lb) as the CHF 840 or approx. 1,870 kg (4,123 lb) as the CHF 1300.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Five CNC-controlled axes (V1, Z1, X1, X2, Y1) with no manual setting of radial or tangential clearance angles
- Saw change without adjusting the mounting carriage
- Multi-surface program for flank offsets is standard
- Fully automated single-sided machining is possible, for conical prescoring saws for example
- Available for blades up to 840 mm (33.1 in) or up to 1,300 mm (51.2 in)
Limitations
- Radial clearance is 0° to 6° in normal two-sided grinding; steeper negative angles may need single-sided passes
- The 1.1 kW (1.5 hp) grinding motor and variable grinding speed are optional
- Tooth pitch above 100 mm (3.9 in) requires the optional second feed pawl
- Blade thickness is limited to 8 mm (0.31 in)

Tooth sides. It is a CNC-controlled machine for grinding the flanks of carbide-tipped circular saw blades with a diameter of 80 to 840 mm (3.1 to 33.1 in) on the CHF 840 or 80 to 1,300 mm (3.1 to 51.2 in) on the CHF 1300. Faces and tops are ground on a separate machine.
02
A tangential clearance angle of 0° to 8° and a radial clearance angle of 0° to 6°. The table notes that radial angles up to -20° can be machined where necessary, possibly single-sided. Vollmer also lists convex tooth flanks and positive or negative radial angles such as those on prescoring saws.
03
Grinding forwards and back without lift-off; a rapid forward movement, feed and a grinding pass back; grinding forwards, lift-off and rapid return; and oscillation grinding with selectable feed and number of strokes. Oscillation grinding is standard. Edge differences and group toothing can be machined.

The connected load is approx. 3.7 kVA without auxiliary equipment. The CHF 840 weighs approx. 1,680 kg (3,704 lb) and the CHF 1300 approx. 1,870 kg (4,123 lb). The coolant tank holds approx. 125 l. Workpiece weight is max. 30 kg (66 lb) on the smaller frame and max. 80 kg (176 lb) on the larger.
