Overview
The Vollmer CB 400 / CBF 400 is a pair of CNC sharpening machines for carbide-tipped band saw blades, the kind used for cutting metal. The CB 400 grinds the tooth top and the tooth face. The CBF 400 grinds both tooth sides at once. Vollmer says the two are usually linked into a production line fed from a coil, so a blade passes through one and then the other.
Blade width runs from 13 to 150 mm (0.51 to 5.9 in) and thickness up to 2.0 mm (0.08 in). Tooth pitch is 4.3 to 200 mm (0.17 to 7.9 in), a wide span that covers fine-pitch blades as well as coarse ones for large sections. Grinding speed is up to 20 mm/s.
Geometry is set by the control, not by hand. Hook angle goes from -25° to 25° for face grinding and from -10° to 25° for side grinding, clearance angle up to 25°. On the sides the tangential clearance angle is up to 6° and the radial clearance angle -10° to 12°. Bevels are possible up to 60° at the tooth flank and, as an option, up to 30° at the tooth face. An integrated measuring probe checks the tooth geometry.
Each operation has its own wheel: 150 mm (5.9 in) for the top, 200 mm (7.9 in) for the face and 70 to 100 mm (2.8 to 3.9 in) for the flanks, all on a 32 mm (1.3 in) bore. Vollmer recommends oil as coolant. The brochure gives one connected load, approx. 4.3 kVA / 3.5 kW, and one weight, approx. 2,800 kg (6,173 lb), without saying which machine they describe. Ask for the figures per machine before planning a line.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Covers band saw blades from 13 to 150 mm (0.51 to 5.9 in) wide with tooth pitches from 4.3 to 200 mm (0.17 to 7.9 in)
- All functions are CNC-controlled, on Vollmer's PMC multiprocessor control with an LCD colour display
- The CBF 400 grinds both tooth sides in one pass (double-sided tooth side grinding)
- Integrated measuring probe for the tooth geometry
- The two machines can be linked into one line fed from a coil
Limitations
- Complete tooth geometry needs both machines: the CB 400 does top and face, the CBF 400 the sides
- Blade thickness is limited to 2.0 mm (0.08 in)
- Hollow face machining, chip breaker machining and bevel grinding are options
- The brochure prints a single connected load and weight for the pair, so per-machine figures have to be requested

Frequently Asked Questions
01
They do different operations on the same blade. The CB 400 is the CNC-controlled machine for tool top grinding and face grinding. The CBF 400 is the CNC-controlled machine for double-sided tooth side grinding. Vollmer describes them as usually linked together in a production line with the stock fed from a coil.
02
Carbide-tipped band saw blades from 13 to 150 mm (0.51 to 5.9 in) wide and up to 2.0 mm (0.08 in) thick, with a tooth pitch from 4.3 to 200 mm (0.17 to 7.9 in). The hook angle range is -25° to 25°, or -10° to 25° for side grinding, and the clearance angle goes up to 25°.
03
The tool top wheel is 150 mm (5.9 in) in outer diameter and the tool face wheel 200 mm (7.9 in), both running at 20 to 41 m/s. The tooth flank wheels are 70 to 100 mm (2.8 to 3.9 in) at 20 to 40 m/s. All have a 32 mm (1.3 in) bore.

As options. Vollmer lists the CB 400 with automatic hollow face machining or chip breaker machining as an option, and bevel grinding as an option too. The bevel angle at the tooth face, up to 30°, is marked as an option in the table, while the bevel at the tooth flank goes up to 60°.
