Overview

The Vollmer QXD 250 erodes, grinds and polishes PCD-tipped rotary tools in a single clamping, on six CNC-controlled axes. Workpieces can be up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in diameter and up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long. It sits above the QM eco select in Vollmer's disc erosion range, and the difference shows in the travels: 520 mm (20.5 in) in X, 970 mm (38.2 in) in Y and 420 mm (16.5 in) in Z.

Why is Y so long? The machine carries a storage for up to six erosion, grinding and polishing wheels of up to 200 mm (7.9 in) in diameter, and the axes have to reach both the wheel in use and the workpiece. Y and Z traverse at 200 mm/s and X at 100 mm/s. The A axis turns at 250 rpm (1500°/s), which is fast enough for grinding as well as for indexing during erosion. B swivels ±20° at 10°/s and E covers 210° at 180°/s.

The main spindle reaches 4,500 rpm with 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) of torque. That is a light drive. It fits relief grinding and polishing behind an eroded PCD edge, not heavy carbide stock removal. Vollmer's Vpulse edm generator is credited by the maker with a 30% higher removal rate when eroding and with surfaces up to 0.1 µRa.

Two external workpiece stores are offered. The HC 5 holds 28 workpieces and the HC 11 holds 64, each piece up to 25 kg (55 lb). Plan the floor for a heavy machine: approx. 7,200 kg (15,873 lb) net, with a connected load of approx. 8.7 kVA / 6.8 kW and a 310 l coolant tank.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Six CNC-controlled axes with measuring, eroding, grinding and polishing in one clamping arrangement
  • Workpieces up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in diameter and 250 mm (9.8 in) long
  • Storage for up to six wheels of up to 200 mm (7.9 in), so erosion and grinding wheels change automatically
  • HC 5 and HC 11 workpiece stores hold 28 or 64 workpieces for unattended running
  • Fast rotary axis: A turns at 250 rpm (1500°/s)

Limitations

  • Workpiece length stops at 250 mm (9.8 in), short for long PCD drills and reamers
  • The grinding spindle offers 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft) at up to 4,500 rpm, which limits it to light grinding
  • At approx. 7,200 kg (15,873 lb) net it is more than twice the weight of the QM eco select, listed at approx. 3,000 kg (6,614 lb)
  • B axis swivel is limited to ±20°

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of tool fits the Vollmer QXD 250?

Workpieces up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in outside diameter and up to 250 mm (9.8 in) in length. With the HC 5 or HC 11 workpiece storage each piece can weigh up to 25 kg (55 lb). The erosion and grinding wheels themselves can be up to 200 mm (7.9 in) in diameter with a bore of up to 60 mm (2.4 in).

02 Can the QXD 250 grind as well as erode?

Yes. Vollmer describes complete machining in one clamping, from measurement through erosion and grinding to polishing. The main spindle runs at 4,500 rpm with 6 Nm (4.4 lb-ft), and the wheel storage holds up to six erosion, grinding and polishing wheels. Polishing and drill machining are listed among the options, so confirm which functions a given machine has.

03 How many workpieces can be loaded automatically?

The HC 5 stores 28 workpieces with a maximum load of 600 kg (1,323 lb). The HC 11 stores 64 with a maximum load of 1,200 kg (2,646 lb). Both take pieces up to 320 mm (12.6 in) in diameter, 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 25 kg (55 lb), and Vollmer says they can be loaded and unloaded while machining continues.

04 What are the axis travels and speeds?

X1 travels 520 mm (20.5 in) at 100 mm/s, Y1 970 mm (38.2 in) at 200 mm/s and Z1 420 mm (16.5 in) at 200 mm/s. A1 rotates through 360° at 250 rpm (1500°/s). B1 swivels ±20° at 10°/s and E1 covers 210° at 180°/s.

05 How does the QXD 250 compare with the QM eco select?

The QM eco select has five CNC axes with B and C set by hand, travels of 280 mm (11.0 in) in X and Y, and no wheel changer in its table. The QXD 250 controls six axes, travels 520 mm (20.5 in) in X, adds grinding on a 4,500 rpm spindle and can be automated. It is also the heavier installation at approx. 7,200 kg (15,873 lb) net.
