Overview

With 2,250 mm (88.58 in) of turning length, the Victor Taichung Vturn-40/220 is the second of four bed lengths in the Vturn-40 heavy lathe family. Its headstock is the family's: an A2-11 nose, a 15 in chuck, 2,500 rpm and Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) of bar capacity.

A bed over two metres long puts shaft support at the centre of the buying decision. The table lists an M.T. #5 tailstock quill, and the option list adds a steady rest in manual or hydraulic form. Any shaft that is long in proportion to its diameter will need one, so it belongs in the quotation from the start.

Diameters depend on the configuration. Ø620 mm (Ø24.4 in) is the 2 Axis maximum; the C Axis machine is listed at Ø580 mm (Ø22.83 in) and the Y Axis machine at Ø520 mm (Ø20.47 in). The turret carries 10 tools without live tooling and 12 with it, on □32 mm shanks.

Adding axes costs very little weight on this length: 15,500 kg (34,171.60 lb) for the 2 Axis machine, 15,600 kg (34,392.07 lb) with the C axis and 15,800 kg (34,832.99 lb) with the Y axis. The control is a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with a 10.4 in screen. An oil skimmer, optional on other models, is noted as standard on the Vturn-40.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,250 mm (88.58 in) turning length behind a 15 in chuck
  • Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) bar capacity at up to 2,500 rpm
  • Steady rest available in manual or hydraulic form
  • Y Axis machine weighs 15,800 kg (34,832.99 lb), close to the 2 Axis figure
  • Programmable tailstock with an M.T. #5 quill

Limitations

  • Maximum turning diameter falls to Ø520 mm (Ø20.47 in) with the Y axis
  • Only 10 turret tools on the 2 Axis machine
  • The steady rest is an option, not standard equipment
  • Needs floor space and a foundation for a 15,500 kg (34,171.60 lb) machine
06

Best For

Shafts and rolls up to 2,250 mm (88.58 in) long Long parts needing keyways or flats, on the C Axis or Y Axis machine Heavy roughing on □32 mm tooling Tube work up to Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) through the spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a shaft fits the Vturn-40/220?

Maximum turning length is 2,250 mm (88.58 in). The tailstock quill is M.T. #5 and a manual or hydraulic steady rest is listed as an option for supporting the middle of a long part.

02 What does the Vturn-40/220 weigh?

15,500 kg (34,171.60 lb) as a 2 Axis machine, 15,600 kg (34,392.07 lb) with the C axis and 15,800 kg (34,832.99 lb) with the Y axis. Plan the foundation and the unloading route around those figures.

03 Does the Vturn-40/220 offer live tooling?

Yes. A C axis with live tooling is on the option list, and the table has C Axis and Y Axis columns, each with a 12-tool turret. Maximum turning diameter is Ø580 mm (Ø22.83 in) and Ø520 mm (Ø20.47 in) for those two.

04 How does the Vturn-40/220 differ from the Vturn-45/220?

The spindle bore. The Vturn-40/220 passes Ø91 mm (Ø3.58 in) bar at up to 2,500 rpm. The Vturn-45/220 passes Ø117.5 mm (Ø4.62 in) at up to 2,000 rpm. Both use an A2-11 nose with a 15 in chuck.
