Overview
The Trumpf TruLaser 1040 Fiber is the mid-format version of Trumpf's entry-level 2D fiber laser cutting platform, offering a 4,000 x 2,000 mm (157 x 79 in) working area that handles oversized sheets beyond what standard 5x10 ft machines can process. It shares the same TruFiber beam sources, Touchpoint HMI control, and cutting technology as the 1030, but the larger bed opens the door to 8x13 ft sheet processing without repositioning or trimming.
The 1040 runs the same laser power options as its smaller sibling: 4 kW, 6 kW, 9 kW, and 12 kW TruFiber beam sources. Cutting capacities are identical -- up to 30 mm mild steel at 12 kW (35 mm with thick-sheet package), 40 mm stainless (50 mm with package), and 30 mm aluminum. The larger format doesn't compromise cutting capability. Maximum positioning speed holds at 140 m/min simultaneous, matching the 1030.
The bigger working area means a bigger machine. At 11,150 x 6,650 x 2,200 mm (439 x 262 x 87 in) and 12,000 kg (26,455 lb), the 1040 requires significantly more floor space than the 1030. Table load capacity increases to 2,000 kg without pallet changer, or up to 3,900 kg with the heavy-duty pallet changer -- reflecting the heavier sheets that come with the larger format.
The machine features the same single-cutting-head strategy with automatic focus adjustment, NanoJoints technology, PierceLine piercing control, collision protection, and integrated gas mixer found across the 1000 series. Programming runs through TruTops Boost CAM software, and the Touchpoint HMI provides the same operator interface as all current Trumpf machines.
The 1040 format is particularly relevant for fabricators in structural steel, architectural metalwork, shipbuilding components, and any application where 5x10 ft sheets are too small. Many shops find they're constantly nesting two parts across two sheets when a single larger sheet would be more efficient. The 1040 eliminates that constraint while staying within Trumpf's entry-level pricing tier.
New TruLaser 1040 Fiber machines start around $300,000-$400,000 for the 4 kW configuration. The 12 kW with automation options runs $550,000-$750,000. The price premium over the 1030 is roughly 15-25%, which is modest considering the nearly doubled working area.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 4,000 x 2,000 mm working area handles oversized sheets that won't fit on standard 5x10 ft laser cutters, eliminating repositioning and sheet trimming
- Same TruFiber beam sources and cutting technology as the entire 1000 series -- identical cut quality regardless of machine size
- 2,000 kg table load without pallet changer (3,900 kg with heavy-duty) supports the heavier sheets that come with larger format work
- NanoJoints and PierceLine technology carry over from the 1030, maintaining the same production efficiency features
- Entry-level pricing tier makes large-format Trumpf laser cutting accessible without jumping to the 3060 or 5060 price range
- Single-cutting-head with automatic focus adjustment keeps operation simple across all material types and thicknesses
Limitations
- 12,000 kg weight and 11.15 m length require significant floor space -- verify ceiling height and foundation capacity before ordering
- 140 m/min positioning speed is the same as the 1030, so the larger travel distances mean longer non-cutting time on big sheets
- Fewer shops need the 4,000 x 2,000 mm format, which limits resale market compared to the more common 3,000 x 1,500 mm machines
- Trumpf service premiums apply -- large-format machines mean larger replacement parts and higher maintenance costs
- TruTops Boost CAM licensing and Trumpf ecosystem lock-in add to total cost of ownership

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines start around $300,000-$400,000 for the 4 kW configuration. The 12 kW model with automation pushes into $550,000-$750,000. That's roughly a 15-25% premium over the 1030 for a working area that's nearly doubled. Used machines from recent years trade in the $200,000-$350,000 range.
02
The working area is 4,000 x 2,000 mm (157 x 79 in), which accommodates sheets up to approximately 8x13 ft. With the heavy-duty pallet changer, maximum sheet weight is 3,300 kg on a single pallet or 3,900 kg combined. This covers most oversized sheet applications without jumping to the even larger 1060 format.
03
Essentially, yes. The 1040 shares the same TruFiber laser sources, Touchpoint HMI control, single-cutting-head strategy, NanoJoints, PierceLine, and all other core technologies with the 1030. The only differences are working area (4,000 x 2,000 vs 3,000 x 1,500 mm), machine footprint, weight, and table load capacity. Cutting speeds and material capabilities are identical.
04
The 3060 offers an even larger 6,000 x 2,500 mm working area, faster positioning at 170 m/min, BrightLine fiber technology, CoolLine, Highspeed Eco mode, and more automation options. The 1040 gives you 4,000 x 2,000 mm at entry-level pricing. If you need the extra format and cutting features, the 3060 is worth the premium. If 4,000 x 2,000 mm covers your work, the 1040 saves significant capital.
05
The machine itself measures 11,150 x 6,650 x 2,200 mm (439 x 262 x 87 in). Add clearance for pallet changer operation, material handling, and service access, and you're looking at roughly 15 x 9 meters (50 x 30 ft) minimum. The foundation needs to support 12,000 kg base weight plus loaded sheet weight.
06
Yes. The pallet changer can be added or upgraded to the heavy-duty version. Trumpf's LiftMaster and SortMaster automation modules are compatible. However, the full range of automation options available on the 3000 and 5000 series is more limited on the 1000 platform, so plan your automation roadmap before purchasing.
