Overview

The Cincinnati CL-900 in its 5' x 10' size is a linear-motor fiber laser cutting system with two 60 x 120 in (1,524 x 3,048 mm) pallets. Cincinnati's page gives rapid traverse speeds of 12,020 ipm (305,308 mm/min), acceleration in excess of 2.3 G and positioning accuracy of ±0.001 in (±0.0254 mm) over the entire cutting range.

The drive is the point of the machine. Cincinnati calls it a non-mechanical drive system that does not wear, which is how it describes linear motors in place of racks or screws. Beam delivery is by fiber optic, so there are no mirrors to align and no purged beam path to maintain.

Two pallets shuttle through the cutting area. The time between sheets is only the pallet shift, because unloading and reloading happen on the pallet that is outside, and Cincinnati notes that the two pallets can carry two different materials. Scrap falls to a removal system that has no moving conveyor. Dynamic Power Control monitors laser power and cutting feedrate together, and the operator works at a 22 in touchscreen running a Windows-based system.

On the floor the 5' x 10' machine weighs 31,950 lb (14,492 kg). Its enclosure is 124.3 in (3,157 mm) wide, or 189.2 in (4,806 mm) across everything, and 96 in (2,438 mm) high; overall length with the pallet station is 387 in (9,830 mm) and the pallets sit at 39.6 in (1,006 mm). The page's specification table covers dimensions and weight only. Laser power, sheet thickness and pallet load are not in it, so they have to be confirmed with Cincinnati.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Linear motor drive with rapid traverse speeds of 12,020 ipm (305,308 mm/min) and acceleration in excess of 2.3 G
  • Positioning accuracy of ±0.001 in (±0.0254 mm) over the entire cutting range
  • Dual pallets: the time between sheets is only the pallet shift time
  • Fiber optic beam delivery with no mirrors to align
  • Scrap removal system without a moving conveyor

Limitations

  • The specification table lists dimensions and weight only; it states no laser power or pallet load
  • 60 x 120 in (1,524 x 3,048 mm) pallets; wider or longer sheet needs the CL-900 2m x 4m
  • Overall length is 387 in (9,830 mm) and overall width 189.2 in (4,806 mm)
  • At 31,950 lb (14,492 kg) the machine needs the certified foundation plan Cincinnati supplies for each installation

Best For

5 ft x 10 ft sheet cut at high traverse speeds Mixed-material work using one pallet per material Thin-gauge parts with many short moves, where acceleration counts Shops that want to avoid conveyor maintenance under the table
