Overview

The Takamaz XYT-51 is a dual-spindle, dual-turret compound CNC lathe with Y-axis capability, designed for complete machining of complex parts up to 51 mm bar capacity in a single setup. This is one of Takamaz's most capable machines — combining main and sub-spindle turning with live tooling, Y-axis milling, and C-axis contouring to eliminate secondary operations on parts that would traditionally require both a lathe and a machining center.

The main spindle delivers 5,000 RPM with an 18.5/15/11 kW motor through a 100 mm bearing bore, providing serious cutting power for aggressive roughing on steel and cast iron. The sub-spindle runs at 4,000 RPM with 11/7.5/5.5 kW, handling second-operation finishing and backworking. With a 6-inch collet on the main spindle and 8-inch collet on the sub, the XYT-51 accommodates both bar-fed production and chucking work with flexibility that smaller Takamaz models cannot match.

The 12-station turret with BMT45 tooling interface and half-indexing capability effectively provides 24 tool positions, with up to 48 turning tools possible through creative tooling arrangements. Live tooling stations spin at 4,000 RPM with M12-M16 tapping capability, enabling cross-drilling, off-center hole patterns, flats, and complex milled features. The Y-axis provides +/-35 mm of travel for true off-center machining, while 500 mm of Z-travel on both the Z1 and Z2 axes accommodates longer parts.

Controlled by a Fanuc 32i-B — one of the most capable CNC platforms available — the XYT-51 handles sophisticated multi-channel programming for synchronized spindle and turret operations. The A-axis with 550 mm travel and 30 m/min rapid traverse manages part transfer between spindles efficiently. At approximately 3,000 x 2,163 mm, the footprint is compact for a machine of this capability, making the XYT-51 a production-floor-friendly alternative to larger multi-tasking machines.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual-spindle, dual-turret architecture with Y-axis enables complete part machining in a single setup
  • 18.5 kW main spindle provides serious cutting power for aggressive material removal on steel and cast iron
  • BMT45 turret with half-indexing effectively doubles tool capacity to 24 positions without increasing footprint
  • Fanuc 32i-B control handles complex multi-channel synchronized programming for maximum productivity
  • 500 mm Z-travel on both axes accommodates longer parts than most compact multi-tasking lathes
  • 4,000 RPM live tooling with M16 tapping eliminates secondary operations on complex turned-and-milled parts

Limitations

  • Higher acquisition cost than single-spindle Takamaz models requires significant production volume to justify
  • Complex multi-channel programming demands skilled operators or extensive training investment
  • 51 mm bar capacity limits the machine for shops primarily running larger diameter bar stock
  • Limited Western service network compared to Mazak, DMG Mori, or Okuma multi-tasking platforms

Best For

Complete machining of complex automotive and hydraulic components requiring turning, milling, and drilling High-volume bar-fed production of parts up to 51 mm diameter with both-end machining requirements Shops seeking to consolidate lathe and machining center operations into a single machine Production of medical device components, aerospace fittings, and precision fluid power parts Facilities needing Y-axis capability for off-center features without moving parts to a separate milling machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Takamaz XYT-51 cost?

New Takamaz XYT-51 machines price between $280,000 and $400,000 depending on tooling configuration and automation options. The investment is justified by eliminating secondary operations — one XYT-51 replaces a lathe plus a machining center in many applications.

02 What is the Y-axis used for on the XYT-51?

The Y-axis provides +/-35 mm of travel perpendicular to the turning axis, enabling true off-center machining. This allows cross-drilling at positions other than centerline, milling flats and hexagons, and creating complex features that would otherwise require a secondary milling operation.

03 How does the BMT45 half-indexing turret work?

The 12-station turret uses BMT45 tooling and can index to 24 positions by stopping between standard stations. This effectively doubles tool capacity, and with creative tooling arrangements up to 48 turning tools can be accommodated, enabling long production runs without tool changes.

04 How does the XYT-51 compare to a Mazak Quick Turn with milling?

The XYT-51 offers comparable capability to Mazak's multi-tasking lathes in the same size class, with the advantage of Takamaz's production-optimized design and typically lower acquisition cost. Mazak offers a broader service network and more model variants, but the XYT-51 excels in high-volume automated production applications.
