Overview
The Takamaz XTT-500M is the live-tooling variant of Takamaz's twin-turret XTT-500, combining simultaneous dual-turret turning with powered tool capability for cross-drilling, tapping, and milling operations. This machine occupies a unique niche: twin-turret for cycle time reduction on turning operations, plus live tooling for secondary features that would otherwise require a separate mill or drill press.
The main spindle delivers 15/11 kW at up to 4,000 RPM through a 100 mm bore, providing the power for aggressive dual-turret cutting on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and brass. Each of the two 8-station turrets operates independently with 105 mm X-travel and 450 mm Z-travel. The XTT-500M adds 4 live tool positions for power-driven cross-drilling and milling operations at production rates.
The twin-turret configuration with live tooling creates powerful programming options. One turret can perform turning operations while the other handles cross-drilling or tapping, eliminating the sequential wait that single-turret machines impose. Alternatively, both turrets can turn simultaneously on parts that do not require milling, defaulting to pure twin-turret throughput mode.
Rapid traverse rates of 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z keep both turrets moving efficiently. The Fanuc 0i-TF control manages multi-channel programming for synchronized turret operations, including collision avoidance. The integrated gantry loader and compact 1,695 x 1,830 mm footprint maintain the production density Takamaz is known for, making the XTT-500M a compelling option for shops that need both twin-turret speed and milling versatility.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Twin-turret design with live tooling combines simultaneous turning with cross-drilling and milling capability
- One turret can turn while the other drills or taps, eliminating sequential waits on multi-feature parts
- 15/11 kW spindle power supports aggressive dual-turret cutting without sacrificing speed or finish
- 450 mm Z-travel per turret handles longer parts than standard XT-series single-turret machines
- Compact 1,695 x 1,830 mm footprint delivers twin-turret plus milling in modest floor space
- Integrated gantry loader enables lights-out production of complete parts
Limitations
- Only 4 live tool positions limits milling operations compared to the 12-station XT-8M turret
- Twin-turret programming with live tools requires advanced multi-channel CAM or manual programming skill
- Single-spindle design still requires second operation for back-end machining
- Limited Takamaz service network outside Japan may delay repairs and support

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Takamaz XTT-500M machines typically price between $150,000 and $210,000. The live tooling option adds approximately $20,000-$30,000 over the standard XTT-500, justified when parts require cross-drilling or tapping that would otherwise need a secondary machine.
02
The XTT-500M adds 4 live tool positions to the twin-turret layout, enabling power-driven cross-drilling, tapping, and milling. The standard XTT-500 handles only turning, boring, and static-tool drilling operations.
03
The live tool drive is typically shared between turrets, so only one turret runs live tools at a time. However, one turret can perform live tool operations while the other turret executes turning operations simultaneously.
04
The XT-8M has a 12-station turret with all 12 positions capable of live tooling, giving it more milling flexibility. The XTT-500M has twin turrets for faster turning cycles but only 4 live tool positions. Choose the XT-8M for complex milling; choose the XTT-500M when twin-turret turning speed matters more.
