Takamaz XTL-8MYS

The Takamaz XTL-8MYS is the sub-spindle version of the XTL-8MY long-bed lathe. It keeps 175 mm (6.9 in) of X, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z and a +35 / -40 mm Y axis, with a 12-station turret carrying 12 live tools at 4,000 rpm, and adds a sub-spindle rated 7.5 / 5.5 kW (10 / 7.4 HP) on an A axis with 400 mm (15.7 in) of travel. The point is to finish both ends of a part in one machine.

On a single-spindle lathe a shaft that needs work on both ends is turned, unloaded, flipped and loaded again, with a second setup and a second chance of runout between the two ends. Here the sub-spindle takes the part from the main spindle and the back end is machined in the same cycle. The table lists two chuck sizes, 8 in and 6 in, and two spindle bearing diameters, Ø100 mm and Ø75 mm, which fits a larger main spindle and a smaller sub-spindle.

The price of the second spindle is length. The maximum turning length here is 404 mm (15.9 in), against 508 mm (20.0 in) on the XTL-8MY, as the sub-spindle occupies part of the same bed. The floor plan also grows: the XTL-8MYS is 1,965 mm long against 1,930 mm for the XTL-8MY, and wider than the XTL-8MY's 2,410 mm, with a 1,840 mm width given against a footnote.

The Y axis and live tools are the same as on the XTL-8MY: tools turn at 4,000 rpm, the capacity row gives φ20 and M16, and Y rapids at 10 m/min alongside 18 m/min on X and 24 m/min on Z. The optional loader handles parts up to 75 mm in diameter and 5 kg. For shafts that only need work from one end, the XTL-8MY gives more turning length on a smaller footprint.
