Overview

The Johnford ST-160B is a four-metre lathe: 4,050 mm (159.4 in) of Z travel and 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of tailstock travel, with the A2-11 spindle and a 381 mm (15 in) chuck.

At this length the question is often how to machine both ends of a part. The standard machine has a tailstock, and the long part has to be turned end for end. Among the options is a sub-spindle or counter-spindle in replacement of the tailstock, which lets the far end be gripped, driven and machined without a second setup. On a bed with over four metres between the two spindles, that option changes the machine more than any other on the list.

Tube stock can also be fed from behind. The bore is 132.5 mm (5.2 in) and the bar capacity 116 mm (4.6 in); larger spindle bores are offered as an option for work that needs them.

The drive is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), or optionally 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), through four automatic speeds to 2,000 rpm. Swing is 920 mm (36.2 in) over the bed and 700 mm (27.6 in) over the cross slide. The machine is 9,926 mm (390.8 in) long and weighs 24,100 kg (53,020 lb).
