Price estimate
We do not have a price for the SW BA 642 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The SW BA 642 is the four-spindle version of SW's size 6 machine. The spindles are 300 mm (11.8 in) apart, each with 300 mm (11.8 in) of X, 600 mm (23.6 in) of Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z.
Four spindle packages are listed. On HSK-A63 there are 35 kW with 80 Nm, 45 kW with 125 Nm, and 27 kW with 200 Nm, with power rated at 25% ED. On HSK-A80 there is one version: 42 kW with 200 Nm, both at 10% ED. The base speed range is 1-10,000 rpm, and the 35 kW and 45 kW versions can be had with 1-17,500 rpm.
A 300 mm pitch with 200 Nm per spindle is an unusual combination. It lets four mid-sized steel or cast-iron parts be cut together, where most four-spindle machines are confined to light alloys. SW's part list for the BA 6 points the same way: bearing caps, rocker arms, brake calipers and brackets, suspension rods.
Four spindles at that torque load the fixture and the frame heavily when they enter the cut together. SW's answer on the feature list is the monoblock design. The buyer's part of the job is the fixture, which has to clamp four parts alike. The second work table then keeps the spindles busy while the next four are loaded.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Four spindles at a 300 mm (11.8 in) pitch with up to 200 Nm each
- HSK-A80 option with 42 kW at 10% ED on a four-spindle machine
- 600 mm (23.6 in) of Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z per spindle
- Optional 1-17,500 rpm range on the 35 kW and 45 kW versions
- SW's BA 6 feature list names powerful spindles and a monoblock design
Limitations
- Power figures are short-term ratings at 25% ED, or 10% ED for the HSK-A80 version
- No HSK-A100 spindle; that is reserved for the BA 622
- 300 mm (11.8 in) of X per spindle
- SW's page gives no clean interference-circle figure for this model

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Three HSK-A63 versions: 35 kW with 80 Nm, 45 kW with 125 Nm, and 27 kW with 200 Nm. One HSK-A80 version: 42 kW with 200 Nm. Power is rated at 25% ED on the HSK-A63 versions and at 10% ED on the HSK-A80 version. Figures are per spindle.
02
Four, one under each spindle, at a pitch of 300 mm (11.8 in). In SW's naming scheme the last digit is the number of work tables, so a second set of four can be loaded while the first is machined.
03
Per spindle: 300 mm (11.8 in) in X, 600 mm (23.6 in) in Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) in Z. The Y travel equals that of the BA 622, while Z is shorter than the 600 mm of the BA 622.
04
Only with two of the spindle versions. SW's table marks a 1-17,500 rpm range as optional for the 35 kW and 45 kW HSK-A63 spindles. The 27 kW HSK-A63 and the 42 kW HSK-A80 spindles are listed with 1-10,000 rpm only.
