Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STB-55 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
X travel is where the Sharp STB-55 breaks from the smaller STB big bore CNC lathes. The cross slide moves 27.56 in (700 mm), up from 23.62 in (600 mm) on the STB-50, and that longer stroke arrives together with a 55.90 in (1420 mm) swing over the bed.
For facing work the pairing matters. A flange turned on this machine can be close to 55.90 in across, and a tool has to get from the bore to the rim; more cross travel means fewer re-positions on the turret to cover the face. Sharp still qualifies the row: X travel varies by the turret installed, and every turret on the accessory list is an option.
Over the cross slide the swing is 39.37 in (1000 mm). Bed width stays at 31.89 in (810 mm) and outside width at 122.0 in (3,100 mm), so the STB-55 fits the same bay as the sizes below it. Height is 89.4 in (2,270 mm).
The weight row runs from 33,700 lb (15,300 kg) on the shortest bed up to 45,600 lb (20,700 kg) on the longest. Six beds are listed between 59.06 in (1,500 mm) and 236.22 in (6,000 mm) centers; the Z-axis servo is 5.3 hp on the three shorter beds, 9.3 hp on the three longer. One caution on the control: this page's table and its accessory list do not print the same FANUC model, so have the quotation state it.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 27.56 in (700 mm) of X-axis travel, against 23.62 in (600 mm) on the STB-50
- 55.90 in (1420 mm) swing over the bed
- 39.37 in (1000 mm) swing over the cross slide
- Same 122.0 in (3,100 mm) machine width as the smaller STB sizes
- 30 hp spindle motor with 40 hp or 50 hp optional
Limitations
- The control model is printed two ways on Sharp's page
- X travel varies by the turret, and turrets are optional
- Lightest version already weighs 33,700 lb (15,300 kg)
- Z travel on the STB-5560 is 45.28 in (1150 mm), short of its 59.06 in (1,500 mm) centers

Frequently Asked Questions
01
27.56 in (700 mm). Sharp's row is headed X-axis travel, varies by different turrets installed, so the usable stroke depends on whether a 4-way, V-8 or V-12 hydraulic turret is fitted. The STB-50 and smaller sizes are listed at 23.62 in (600 mm).
02
39.37 in (1000 mm), with 55.90 in (1420 mm) over the bed. The STA-55 has the same bed swing and 41.73 in (1060 mm) over its cross slide, on a 24 in (610 mm) bed where the STB-55 uses 31.89 in (810 mm).
03
The X axis has a 5.3 hp Fanuc AC servo on every bed. The Z axis has 5.3 hp on the STB-5560, STB-5580 and STB-55120, and 9.3 hp on the STB-55160, STB-55200 and STB-55240. Ball screws are 1.57 in (40 mm) on X and 2.48 in (63 mm) on Z.
04
No. Both tables give 122.0 in (3,100 mm) width, 89.4 in (2,270 mm) height and lengths with chip conveyor from 229.0 in (5,816 mm) to 406.1 in (10,316 mm). The shortest STB-55 is heavier at 33,700 lb (15,300 kg); the shortest STB-50 is listed at 32,600 lb (14,800 kg).
