How much does the Sharp STA-60 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STA-60 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sharp STA-60 is the largest swing Sharp puts on its 24 in (610 mm) wide STA bed: 59.84 in (1520 mm) over the ways and 45.66 in (1160 mm) over the cross slide. Buyers who need more than this move to a different series, not a bigger STA.
So this is the model on which the limits of the STA design matter most. The swing is about two and a half times the bed width, and the carriage, cross slide and 1.25 in (32 mm) X-axis ball screw are the ones used throughout the range. On a five-foot workpiece the cut is taken far from the ways. Used for what the capacity suggests, turning and threading large pipe, facing big but light fabrications, and finishing large diameters at modest depths of cut, that is a sound arrangement. As a heavy rougher of solid forgings at full swing it is being asked for more than the table promises.
Bores of 6 in, 9 in, 10 in, 12 in and 15 in are listed, the largest being 15 in (380 mm). The spindle motor is 30 hp as standard, and on a machine of this swing the 40 hp or 50 hp options are worth pricing, since large diameters at low speed need torque.
The lightest version, the STA-6060, weighs 29,700 lb (13,472 kg) and the heaviest, the STA-60240, comes to 39,600 lb (17,962 kg). Height is 97.2 in (2,470 mm), the tallest of the STA machines, and width 107.7 in (2,735 mm). Control is by FANUC Oi-TF.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 59.84 in (1520 mm) swing over the bed, the largest in the STA series
- 45.66 in (1160 mm) swing over the cross slide
- Spindle bore up to 15 in (380 mm)
- 40 hp and 50 hp spindle motors available in place of the 30 hp standard
- Six bed lengths, with Z travel up to 218.5 in (5,550 mm) on the STA-60240
Limitations
- A 59.84 in swing over a 24 in (610 mm) bed limits heavy roughing at full diameter
- X-axis ball screw is 1.25 in (32 mm), as on the smallest STA
- Tallest of the series at 97.2 in (2,470 mm)
- The standard motor is 30 hp regardless of swing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Yes. Sharp lists five STA swings, and the STA-60 is the largest with 59.84 in (1520 mm) over the bed. The STA-55 below it swings 55.90 in (1420 mm). All of them share a bed 24 in (610 mm) wide with 2 V and 2 flat ways.
02
45.66 in (1160 mm). That is the practical limit for work longer than the carriage, such as pipe or rolls. Above it, up to 59.84 in (1520 mm), the work must sit clear of the cross slide, as a flange or disc held in the chuck does.
03
Sharp lists a 30 hp Fanuc Alpha 22 motor as standard with 40 hp or 50 hp as options. The table gives no torque or speed figures, so ask Sharp for the speed ranges of the 4 gear steps with each motor before deciding.
04
Length with chip conveyor runs from 208.5 in (5,295 mm) for the STA-6060 to 385.6 in (9,795 mm) for the STA-60240. Weight runs from 29,700 lb (13,472 kg) to 39,600 lb (17,962 kg). Width is 107.7 in (2,735 mm) and height 97.2 in (2,470 mm).
