Overview

With 18.1 in (460 mm) of swing over the bed and 45 in (1,143 mm) between centers, the TRAK TRL 1845RX is the middle size of TRAK's lathes on the ProtoTRAK RLX CNC. The headstock is where it departs from the smaller machine.

The spindle has two ranges, 80 - 850 rpm and 250 - 2,500 rpm, where the TRL 1630RX has a single 150 - 2,500 rpm range, and the motor is 10 hp (7.5 kW) where the TRL 1630RX has 7.5 hp (5.6 kW). Low range is for diameters near the swing limit and for heavy cuts; high range keeps the 2,500 rpm ceiling for small work. The two overlap between 250 and 850 rpm, so many jobs can stay in one range from roughing to finishing.

The D1-6 nose carries a 2.36 in (60 mm) bore on a 3.35 in (85 mm) front bearing. Spindle taper is MT#6, with MT#4 in a reduction sleeve, and the tailstock quill is MT#4 as well, so one set of centers serves both ends. That quill is 2.56 in (65 mm) in diameter and travels 6 in (152 mm).

Tool section goes up to 1 in (25 mm). The optional turret comes in 8-position or 4-position form and accepts 3/4 in or 1 in shanks, which matters to a shop that already owns 1 in holders. Swing over the cross slide is 9.13 in (232 mm), cross-slide travel is 10.6 in (269 mm) and the height of centers is 9 in (229 mm).

The lathe takes up 88 x 55 x 70 in (2,235 x 1,397 x 1,778 mm), weighs 3,285 lbs (1,490 kg) and draws 44.3A full load from a 200V to 240V three-phase supply. Its bed is 13.4 in (340 mm) wide with ways at 480-560 HB, coolant capacity is 13 gal (49 L) and the headstock oil bath holds 1.85 gal.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two spindle ranges, 80 - 850 rpm and 250 - 2,500 rpm, on a 10 hp (7.5 kW) motor with dynamic brake
  • 45 in (1,143 mm) between centers with 18.1 in (460 mm) of swing over the bed
  • Takes tool sections up to 1 in (25 mm); the optional turret accepts 3/4 in or 1 in shanks
  • MT#4 at both ends: in the spindle's reduction sleeve and in the tailstock quill
  • Way surfaces listed at 480-560 HB on a 13.4 in (340 mm) wide bed
  • 2.36 in (60 mm) spindle bore on a D1-6 nose

Limitations

  • A range change is needed to go from 80 rpm work to 2,500 rpm work
  • The 2.36 in (60 mm) bore is far smaller than the 4.09 in (104 mm) of the TRL 2470RX
  • Swing over the cross slide is 9.13 in (232 mm), so long parts near the 18.1 in (460 mm) swing cannot pass the carriage
  • The 8-position or 4-position turret is optional
  • Draws 44.3A full load, against 34.5A for the TRL 1630RX
