Overview

The Mazak MEGA TURN 600M is the milling-equipped variant of the MEGA TURN 600 vertical turning center, combining 600 mm (23.62 in) diameter turning capacity with a milling spindle and C-axis for done-in-one processing of complex parts. The 600M enables shops to turn, drill, tap, and mill medium-to-large diameter parts without moving them to a second machine.

The MEGA TURN 600M features a maximum machining diameter of 600 mm (23.62 in) with a turning height of 550 mm (21.65 in). Chuck sizes range from 18 to 24 inches. The main spindle delivers 30 kW (40 hp) at up to 1,500 RPM with strong torque for heavy cuts. Maximum workpiece weight capacity is approximately 2,000 kg (4,409 lb).

The integrated milling spindle with C-axis is the key differentiator over the base MEGA TURN 600. Cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole patterns, keyway cutting, and contour milling can all be performed on the VTL without rechucking on a machining center. The milling spindle delivers approximately 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) at up to 6,000 RPM. Available in standard (600M) and short-bed (600MS) configurations.

MAZATROL SmoothG handles integrated turning and milling programming with conversational cycles for both operation types. The vertical orientation maintains the inherent VTL advantages: gravity-assisted loading, excellent chip evacuation, and compact footprint.

The MEGA TURN 600M competes with the Okuma V760EX-M, Doosan Puma V600M, and DMG Mori CTV 315M. New machines price between $280,000 and $420,000. The 600M sits between the smaller MEGA TURN 500M and the larger MEGA TURN 900M in Mazak's vertical mill-turn lineup.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling spindle with C-axis enables complete processing of parts with bolt holes, tapped features, and milled flats
  • 23.62-inch turning diameter handles large flanges, housings, and castings common in energy and heavy equipment
  • 30 kW spindle with strong torque enables aggressive roughing at large diameters in steel and cast iron
  • Vertical orientation provides gravity-assisted loading and excellent chip evacuation on heavy parts
  • Eliminates crane moves to a machining center for secondary operations, saving time and improving accuracy
  • Compact vertical footprint saves floor space compared to horizontal mill-turn alternatives

Limitations

  • $40K-$60K premium over base MEGA TURN 600 for milling adds cost for pure turning applications
  • 1,500 RPM spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter features within the envelope
  • 5.5 kW milling power handles drilling and tapping but is limited for heavy milling operations
  • Overhead crane required for loading heavy workpieces, adding infrastructure cost

Best For

Energy sector manufacturers machining valve bodies and flanges with bolt-hole patterns and tapped ports Aerospace shops producing bearing housings and casings with both turned bores and drilled mounting holes Heavy equipment manufacturers turning and drilling gear blanks, sprocket blanks, and housing components Foundry shops finishing castings that need both turning and drilling in a single setup Job shops needing a versatile mid-size VTL that handles both pure turning and mill-turn work

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak MEGA TURN 600M cost?

New pricing runs $280,000-$420,000 depending on configuration and options. The 600MS short-bed is at the lower end. The milling upgrade adds approximately $40,000-$60,000 over the base MEGA TURN 600.

02 What is the difference between MEGA TURN 600 and 600M turning diameter?

The base 600 has a 630 mm (24.8 in) max turning diameter while the 600M is slightly smaller at 600 mm (23.62 in). The difference is due to the milling turret geometry requiring additional clearance. Both share the same 21.65-inch turning height.

03 MEGA TURN 600M vs 900M: which size do I need?

The 900M handles parts up to 920 mm diameter and 3,000 kg. The 600M maxes out at 600 mm diameter and 2,000 kg. The 900M costs $100,000-$150,000 more. Choose based on your largest part diameter and weight requirement.

04 Can the MEGA TURN 600M replace a horizontal lathe plus machining center?

For disc-type and flange-type parts up to 600 mm diameter, yes. The VTL handles turning plus drilling, tapping, and milling in one setup. For long shaft work or heavy 3D milling, a horizontal lathe or INTEGREX is still more appropriate.
