How much does the Sharp STB-44 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STB-44 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Bore choice starts with the Sharp STB-44. This 44.09 in (1120 mm) swing big bore CNC lathe is the first size in the STB line where the table lists five spindle bores, 6 in (152 mm), 9 in (230 mm), 10 in (255 mm), 12 in (305 mm) and 15 in (380 mm), where the STB-38 below it is listed with the 6 in bore alone. Sharp's bullet list calls the 6" bore standard.
The frame is the same heavy one. A 31.89 in (810 mm) bed with 2 V, 2 Flat Ways carries the carriage, the bed and base are one casting, and the headstock spindle runs in one ball bearing and two tapered roller bearings. Over the cross slide the machine clears 27.56 in (700 mm), which is the figure to check for a pipe body that must run the length of the bed.
How do you hold a long tube that sticks out behind a 15 in bore? Sharp offers a rear chuck adapter so a second chuck can be mounted on the back of the headstock; it is an option, like the double chucks it serves.
Six beds cover 59.06 in (1,500 mm) to 236.22 in (6,000 mm) between centers. The STB-4460 weighs 30,800 lb (14,000 kg) and the STB-44240 42,700 lb (19,400 kg). A 30 hp spindle motor is standard with 40 hp or 50 hp optional, and speed changes through four steps by M code.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Sharp's table lists 6 in (152 mm), 9 in (230 mm), 10 in (255 mm), 12 in (305 mm) and 15 in (380 mm). The overview bullet reads 6" standard, followed by the four larger sizes, and the feature text adds that double chucks are available as options.
02
The STB-38 swings 37.79 in (960 mm) over the bed and 21.26 in (540 mm) over the cross slide; the STB-44 swings 44.09 in (1120 mm) and 27.56 in (700 mm). The STB-44 adds the larger bores. Bed width, X travel, motors and outside dimensions are the same in both tables. In its shortest form the STB-44 weighs 30,800 lb (14,000 kg), where the shortest STB-38 is listed at 28,600 lb (13,000 kg).
03
Turrets are options. The accessory list names a hydraulic 4-way turret, a hydraulic V-8 turret and a hydraulic V-12 turret; the V-8 and V-12 come with three boring toolholders, one facing toolholder and a turret sleeve. Sharp notes that X-axis travel, 23.62 in (600 mm), varies with the turret.
04
Width is 122.0 in (3,100 mm) and height 89.4 in (2,270 mm) for every bed. Length with the chip conveyor is 229.0 in (5,816 mm) for the STB-4460 and 406.1 in (10,316 mm) for the STB-44240, with a flat belt conveyor on the standard accessory list.
