How much does the Sharp STA-55 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp STA-55 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
With 55.90 in (1420 mm) over the bed, the Sharp STA-55 sits one step below the top of the STA big bore CNC lathe range. Its place in the line is easiest to see in the swing over the cross slide, 41.73 in (1060 mm), since that is the diameter that can travel the length of a long part.
A shop choosing between neighbours should look at three rows. Against the STA-50 this model gains cross-slide swing, going from 37.79 in (960 mm) to 41.73 in. It stands 95.3 in (2,420 mm) high. And each bed length carries a little more iron: the STA-5560 weighs 29,000 lb (13,154 kg) and the STA-55240 38,900 lb (17,645 kg). Everything else in Sharp's table is common to both, including the 23.62 in (600 mm) X travel.
That X figure limits facing. A tool cannot sweep from the center of a 55.90 in face to its rim in one pass of the cross slide, so large faces may need the tool re-positioned on the turret or a different turret altogether. Sharp says X travel varies with the turret installed and offers 4-way, V-8 and V-12 hydraulic turrets as options.
The usual STA equipment applies: a 30 hp spindle motor with 40 hp and 50 hp options, bores of 6 in to 15 in, a FANUC Oi-TF control and six beds from 59.06 in (1,500 mm) to 236.22 in (6,000 mm) between centers. The servo on the Z axis is 5.3 hp on the shortest bed and 9.3 hp on the longest.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Swing over the bed is 55.90 in (1420 mm) against 51.97 in (1320 mm) on the STA-50, and swing over the cross slide 41.73 in (1060 mm) against 37.79 in (960 mm). The STA-55 is 95.3 in (2,420 mm) high where the STA-50 is 93.3 in (2,370 mm). Bed, bores, motors and lengths are the same.
02
All are options: a hydraulic 4-way turret, a hydraulic V-8 turret and a hydraulic V-12 turret, the last two supplied with boring toolholders, a facing toolholder and a turret sleeve according to Sharp's STA accessory list. X travel of 23.62 in (600 mm) varies with the turret chosen.
03
Distance between centers is 59.06 in (1,500 mm) on the STA-5560 and 236.22 in (6,000 mm) on the STA-55240, with four lengths between. Z-axis travel is shorter than the center distance, from 41.34 in (1,050 mm) to 218.5 in (5,550 mm).
04
Yes, with options. Sharp states that double chucks are available for holding extra long and large pipes, and lists a rear chuck adapter among the optional accessories. Chucks themselves, in 3 jaw, 4 jaw and hydraulic types, are also options.
