Overview

The Goodway GS-4000 is a geared-spindle, box-way turning center for 15 in and 18 in chucks, with Ø115 mm (4.5 in) of bar capacity and four bed lengths that run from 800 mm (31.5 in) to 3,100 mm (122.0 in) of turning length. Goodway rates the spindle motor at 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 37 kW (49.6 hp) for 30 min., and says the two-speed gearbox delivers up to 2,900 Nm at the spindle.

The four beds give Z1 travels of 850 mm (33.5 in), 1,600 mm (63.0 in), 2,400 mm (94.5 in) and 3,200 mm (126.0 in). Goodway attaches a note to the turning-length figures: they apply with the 15 in chuck. X travel is 360 mm (14.2 in), turning diameter Ø650 mm (25.6 in) and swing Ø770 mm (30.3 in).

One detail in the table is easy to miss. The sub-spindle axis, ZS, has travel figures only for the two shorter beds, 800 mm (31.5 in) and 1,550 mm (61.0 in); the two longer beds show a dash. Anyone planning a sub-spindle machine for long shafts should confirm what is possible.

Where fitted, that sub-spindle has an 8 in chuck and is rated 15 kW (20.1 hp) continuous, 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) for 15 min., at 4,800 rpm. The optional live tooling turret has 12 stations with ER40 collets and a 7.5 kW drive, running 4,000 rpm, or 6,000 rpm on Y-axis machines. Y travel is 120 mm (4.7 in). The table gives no maximum spindle speed for this model.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2-speed geared spindle with up to 2,900 Nm of torque, per Goodway
  • 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous, 37 kW (49.6 hp) 30 min. motor
  • Four bed lengths, up to 3,100 mm (122.0 in) of turning length
  • Optional live tooling with ER40 collets and a 7.5 kW drive
  • Optional Y-axis with 120 mm (4.7 in) of travel

Limitations

  • Goodway's table lists no maximum spindle speed for this model
  • Sub-spindle travel is given only for the two shorter beds
  • Turning-length figures apply with the 15 in chuck; an 18 in chuck will reduce them
  • Turning diameter with the Y-axis is Ø460 mm (18.1 in), down from Ø650 mm (25.6 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bed lengths does the GS-4000 come in?

Four. Z1-axis travel is 850 mm (33.5 in), 1,600 mm (63.0 in), 2,400 mm (94.5 in) or 3,200 mm (126.0 in), and the maximum turning lengths with a 15 in chuck are 800 mm (31.5 in), 1,500 mm (59.1 in), 2,300 mm (90.6 in) and 3,100 mm (122.0 in).

02 How much torque does the GS-4000 spindle produce?

Goodway states that the 37 kW spindle motor drives a 2-speed gearbox with a maximum spindle torque output of 2,900 Nm. The table rates the motor at 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 37 kW (49.6 hp) on the 30 min. rating.

03 What is the difference between the GS-4000 and the GS-4300?

Spindle bore and chuck. The GS-4000 takes 15 in or 18 in chucks and passes Ø115 mm (4.5 in) bar. The GS-4300 takes 20 in or 24 in chucks and passes Ø165 mm (6.5 in). Motor, travels and turret are identical in Goodway's table.

04 What live tooling does the GS-4000 offer?

An optional 12-station live tooling turret with ER40 collets, driven by a 7.5 kW (30 min.) motor through a reduction mechanism. Live tooling speed is 4,000 rpm, or 6,000 rpm on machines with the Y-axis. The Y-axis itself travels 120 mm (4.7 in), ±60 mm.
