The Mazak MEGA TURN 1600 is the largest size of the series by a wide margin: Ø65 in (1,651 mm) of turning diameter, 11,023 lb (5,000 kg) on the table and a spindle that tops out at 350 rpm with 7,405 ft-lb (10,040 Nm) of torque at a 40%ED rating. Mazak's series page states the maximum machining diameter as 64.96 in.
Its proportions differ from the smaller models. X travel is 45 in (1,143 mm), longer than the 36 in (914 mm) of Z, where the Mega Turn 900 has 19 in (483 mm) of X and 34 in (864 mm) of Z. Nearly all the growth is in diameter. Z gains very little over the Mega Turn 900, so this is a machine for wide parts of moderate height. Rapids are 945 ipm (24 m/min) on both axes.
The motor is larger too, rated 37 kW (50 HP) continuous and 45 kW (60 HP) (40% ED) against the 22 kW (30 HP) continuous rating of the Mega Turn 900. A 350 rpm ceiling is ample at the rim of a large part and restrictive near the centre, so facing down to a small bore and small-diameter boring will run slowly. Tooling is of the same class as the rest of the series: a 12-tool turret, a 1 in (25 mm) shank height and Ø2 in (51 mm) boring bars.
Two series options stop short of this model. Mirror-image versions are offered for every size except the 1600 and 1600M, and the two-pallet changer option is listed for the 900 and 900M.
Installation is a project in itself. The machine weighs 55,115 lb (25,000 kg), measures 163 in (4,140 mm) × 127 in (3,226 mm) with the MAZATROL SmoothEz control and stands 137 in (3,480 mm) tall, so the foundation, lifting plan and door openings need checking early.
