Overview

A twin-turret shaft lathe with 1,500 mm (59 in) between centers, the Johnford HT-60-2D holds the work between a chuck of up to Ø610 mm (24 in) and a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) tailstock quill while two 12-station turrets cut.

The turrets' Z travels are 1,500 mm (59 in) and 1,260 mm (49.6 in). On a shaft that fills the machine, the long-travel carriage reaches every diameter and the other covers most of the length, which is enough for the usual use of a second turret on this kind of work: a roughing tool leading, a finishing or grooving tool following, or two roughing tools opposed on a slender section.

Tailstock travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), with a further 200 mm (7.9 in) in the MT#7 rotary quill. Swing over the bed is Ø730 mm (28.7 in) and over the cross slide Ø600 mm (23.6 in).

Spindle choice sets the character. Variant A, 3,000 rpm with the 12 in chuck, makes a fast machine for bar-sized shafts up to Ø91 mm (3.6 in). Variant E, at 750 rpm with a Ø236 mm (9.3 in) bore, makes a pipe and heavy-shaft machine. The weight moves only from 19,000 kg (41,800 lb) to 19,200 kg (42,240 lb) between those two, so the bed and carriages are the same whichever headstock is fitted.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two turrets on 1,500 mm (59 in) between centers
  • Tailstock travel of 1,200 mm (47.2 in) plus 200 mm (7.9 in) of quill travel
  • Spindle variants from 3,000 rpm (A, 12 in chuck) to a Ø236 mm (9.3 in) bore (E)
  • Dual-path control system as standard
  • Hydraulic steady rests with manual travelling or CNC motor are available

Limitations

  • Second turret travels 1,260 mm (49.6 in), not the full 1,500 mm (59 in)
  • Both Z axes use 4 kW servo motors; the HT-80-2D has 7 kW
  • Swing over the bed is Ø730 mm (28.7 in), less than on the HT-40-2D at Ø750 mm (29.5 in)
  • Steady rests are not included

Best For

Shafts up to 1,500 mm (59 in) cut with leading and following tools Rolls and spindles held between chuck and MT#7 center Mixed bar and pipe work, depending on spindle variant

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a shaft does the HT-60-2D turn?

Distance between centers is 1,500 mm (59 in). The Z1 axis travels the full 1,500 mm (59 in) and the Z2 axis 1,260 mm (49.6 in). The tailstock travels 1,200 mm (47.2 in).

02 Does the spindle variant change the weight of the HT-60-2D much?

No. The table lists 19,000 kg (41,800 lb) for A, 19,050 kg (41,910 lb) for B, 19,100 kg (42,020 lb) for C, 19,150 kg (42,130 lb) for D and 19,200 kg (42,240 lb) for E.

03 Can the HT-60-2D mill and drill off-center?

Only with options. The standard turrets are non-driven. Johnford lists a live tool 12-position turret in BMT or VDI, a C-axis with or without gearbox, and a Y axis on the upper turret as optional accessories.

04 What are the rapid traverse rates of the HT-60-2D?

12 m/min on X and 15 m/min on Z. The X1 and X2 axes have 4 kW servo motors and so do the Z1 and Z2 axes. All axes run on heavy box ways.
