How much does the Seibu MEX15 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Seibu MEX15 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Seibu MEX15 is a micro-scale ultra-precision wire EDM: 150 × 150 × 120 mm (5.9 × 5.9 × 4.7 in) of axis travel, a 12 kg (26 lb) workpiece limit and wire down to Φ0.03 mm. Seibu lists it under both its water-specification and its oil-specification headings, with the same table under each.
Everything about the machine is scaled to small, thin parts. The workpiece may be up to 180 × 165 × 60 mm (7.1 × 6.5 × 2.4 in), and the 12 kg figure includes the weight of the jig. Standard wire is Φ0.1 mm and the range runs from Φ0.03 to Φ0.15 mm. On Seibu's larger machines such as the MM35UP, Φ0.2 mm is the standard wire.
Seibu's own cutting samples show the intended work. A lead frame cut in 3 mm SKD11 under water lists Ra 0.10 µm and a shape accuracy of ±1 µm. A comb shape in 1 mm WC, cut in oil, lists Ra 0.10 µm, Rz 0.91 µm and ±2 µm. Both were cut with Φ0.03 wire.
The machine around that small envelope is not small. It weighs 3,250 kg (7,165 lb), more than the 2,700 kg (5,952 lb) MM35UP, and measures 1,830 × 1,770 × 1,855 mm (72.0 × 69.7 × 73.0 in). Plan floor space and rigging as for a mid-size machine.
Taper cutting is ±10° at a thickness of 60 mm (2.4 in), listed with conical cutting, on U-V axes of ±20 × ±20 mm (±0.8 × ±0.8 in). Control is Smart NC, the power supply MPSC-20 and the filtration device MF300. The table does not say what changes between the water and the oil build, so the dielectric and its equipment need to be settled with Seibu.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Runs wire from Φ0.03 to Φ0.15 mm, the finest range on Seibu's product page
- Listed under both water and oil specifications
- Seibu's samples for the model report shape accuracy of ±1 µm in water and ±2 µm in oil
- 3,250 kg (7,165 lb) of machine for a 150 × 150 × 120 mm (5.9 × 5.9 × 4.7 in) travel
- ±10° taper with conical cutting at a 60 mm (2.4 in) thickness
Limitations
- Workpiece weight is limited to 12 kg (26 lb), including the jig
- Maximum workpiece is 180 × 165 × 60 mm (7.1 × 6.5 × 2.4 in)
- U-V travel is ±20 × ±20 mm (±0.8 × ±0.8 in), against ±60 × ±60 mm (±2.4 × ±2.4 in) on the MM35UP
- Largest wire is Φ0.15 mm, so it cannot run the Φ0.2 mm wire that is standard on the MM35UP
- Needs 1,830 × 1,770 × 1,855 mm (72.0 × 69.7 × 73.0 in) of space despite the small stroke

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Seibu's product page shows the MEX15 twice, once under the water-specification heading and once under the oil-specification heading, with identical tables. Its two cutting samples for the model are one cut in water and one cut in oil. The page does not list what differs between the two builds.
02
The listed wire range is Φ0.03 to Φ0.15 mm, with Φ0.1 mm as standard. Both of Seibu's published samples for the machine, a lead frame and a comb shape, were cut with Φ0.03 wire.
03
Up to 180 × 165 × 60 mm (7.1 × 6.5 × 2.4 in) and 12 kg (26 lb). Seibu's notes add that the workpiece must not exceed the weight limit whatever its size and that the 12 kg includes the jig or the like. Axis travel is 150 × 150 × 120 mm (5.9 × 5.9 × 4.7 in).
04
The table has no accuracy row. The cutting samples do: the water-cut lead frame in 3 mm SKD11 lists a shape accuracy of ±1 µm with Ra 0.10 µm and Rz 0.90 µm, and the oil-cut comb in 1 mm WC lists ±2 µm with Ra 0.10 µm and Rz 0.91 µm. These are sample results on specific parts.
05
Yes, within a small range. The table gives ±10° at a thickness of 60 mm (2.4 in) and adds conical cutting. U-V axis travel is ±20 × ±20 mm (±0.8 × ±0.8 in). No steeper taper option is listed for this model.
