Overview

The Sodick AQ1500L is the largest wire EDM in Sodick's AQ series, offering 1,500 x 1,000 x 600 mm X/Y/Z travel and an 8,000 kg maximum workpiece capacity. This machine occupies the extreme end of the wire EDM market, purpose-built for the largest progressive die plates, heavy forging die blocks, oversized aerospace structural components, and extra-large mold bases. The work tank inner dimensions of 2,124 x 1,600 mm accept workpieces up to 1,900 x 1,400 x 600 mm during flushing.

The AQ1500L's 600 mm Z-axis travel is a significant differentiator. Most large-format wire EDMs top out at 400-420 mm. This extended height enables cutting of thick die blocks, stacked part assemblies, and tall aerospace structural components without setup compromises. The LP power supply with Intelligent Q3vic EDW technology delivers adaptive spark energy management optimized for the full 600 mm workpiece height.

Direct-drive linear motors power all positioning axes. On a 1,500 mm X-axis, the thermal and mechanical advantages of screwless drives are at their most dramatic: a conventional ball screw of this length would exhibit multiple microns of thermal expansion under production loads. The linear motor architecture eliminates these degradation mechanisms entirely.

At 15,000 kg machine weight and a 5,600 x 4,435 mm footprint (6,700 x 5,765 mm installation space), the AQ1500L is a facility-defining investment requiring purpose-built foundations, heavy crane access, three-phase 15 kVA power, and dedicated chiller and filtration systems.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,500 x 1,000 mm travel is among the largest in any production wire EDM
  • 600 mm Z-axis height exceeds the 400 mm standard on most large-format competitors
  • 8,000 kg workpiece capacity handles the heaviest die blocks and forging tooling
  • Direct-drive linear motors across 1,500 mm X travel eliminate thermal expansion issues
  • LP power supply maintains cut quality through the full 600 mm Z height
  • Super Jet AWT with annealing ensures reliable threading for multi-day jobs

Limitations

  • At 15,000 kg and 6,700 x 5,765 mm installation space, requires purpose-built facility
  • Capital cost of $600,000-$850,000 justified only by consistent extra-large workpiece throughput
  • Extended lead times due to machine scale and limited production volume
  • Large dielectric volume increases operating consumable costs

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the AQ1500L compare to the AQ1200L?

1,500 x 1,000 mm travel versus 1,200 x 800 mm, doubles workpiece weight to 8,000 kg, and critically offers 600 mm Z-axis versus 400 mm. Weighs 15,000 kg versus 11,000 kg.

02 What is special about the 600 mm Z-axis?

Most large-format wire EDMs offer 400 mm Z height. The 600 mm enables thick die blocks, tall stacked assemblies, and oversized forging dies. The LP power supply is calibrated for stable spark delivery through the full height.

03 What foundation and crane requirements apply?

Reinforced concrete for 15,000 kg machine plus 8,000 kg workpiece. Overhead crane rated for machine installation. 6,700 x 5,765 mm installation space with full operator access clearance.

04 Is it suitable for carbide cutting?

Yes. The LP power supply includes carbide technology tables. Carbide generates cobalt-contaminated dielectric requiring more frequent filtration maintenance.
