Overview

Between centers the ROMI C 510 takes 1.5 m (59 in), and over the bed it swings 520 mm (20 in). That puts this flat-bed CNC lathe one step above the smallest C Series machine, with a 15 hp / 11 kW main motor and noticeably more torque than its size suggests.

Torque is the figure to look at. The A2-6” headstock gives 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) and runs from 3 to 3,000 rpm through a 65 mm (2.6 in) spindle hole. Choose the A2-8” headstock and the hole grows to 80 mm (3.1 in), torque rises to 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) and top speed falls to 2,200 rpm. Both are direct drive by belt, so there is no gear change to plan around.

The C 510 is also the one model in the table with a WTO driven tool holder. It is a VDI-50 unit with ER-40 collets for Ø 4 to Ø 26 mm tools, axial and radial, running from 1 to 1,500 rpm. That is enough for a keyway, a cross hole or a flat on a shaft without sending it to a mill. For plain turning there is an optional 8-station horizontal automatic turret, a rear tool holder and a 3-holder quick change post.

Capacity over the cross slide is 255 mm (10 in). X travel is 280 mm (11 in), Z travel 1,555 mm (61 in), and rapids are 10 m/min (394 in/min) on both. The tailstock can be ordered with drag positioning through the table, which saves the operator pushing it along a 1.5 m bed, and with a pneumatic or hydraulic quill. The machine weighs about 3,750 kg (8,200 lbs) and is controlled by a Siemens Sinumerik 828D.

  • Optional WTO driven tool holder with ER-40 collets, 1 to 1,500 rpm, for milled and drilled features
  • Spindle hole of 80 mm (3.1 in) with the A2-8” nose
  • Drag positioning of the tailstock through the table is available
  • Rapid traverse of 10 m/min (394 in/min) in X and Z

Limitations

  • Driven tools turn at 1,500 rpm at most, slow for small drills and end mills
  • A single bed length: 1.5 m (59 in) between centers
  • The A2-8” headstock is limited to 2 to 2,200 rpm
  • Swing over the cross slide is 255 mm (10 in), about half the swing over the bed

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the ROMI C 510 mill and drill off-centre features?

With the optional WTO tool holder, yes. It is a VDI-50 (DIN 69880-50) holder with axial and radial driven units taking ER-40 collets for Ø 4 to Ø 26 mm tools. The driven tool speed range is 1 to 1,500 rpm.

02 What are the headstock choices on the C 510?

An A2-6” headstock with a 65 mm (2.6 in) hole, 3 to 3,000 rpm and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), or an A2-8” headstock with an 80 mm (3.1 in) hole, 2 to 2,200 rpm and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft). The main motor is 15 hp / 11 kW (S6 - 40% rating) in both cases.

03 How long and how large a part does the C 510 take?

Distance between centers is 1.5 m (59 in). Swing over the bed is 520 mm (20 in), over the saddle wings 450 mm (17.7 in) and over the cross slide 255 mm (10 in). Carriage travel is 1,555 mm (61 in).

04 How does the C 510 compare with the C 420?

The C 510 is longer and stronger. It has 1.5 m (59 in) between centers where the C 420 has 1.0 m (39 in), and its motor is 15 hp / 11 kW. Both rapid at 10 m/min (394 in/min) and both need 20 kVA.
