Overview
The Palmary OCD-45150 opens the heavy duty OCD range: a CNC cylindrical grinder with Ø450 mm (17.7 in) of swing, 1,500 mm (59.1 in) between centers and, the figure that defines the series, 800 kg (1,764 lb) between centers. Maximum grinding diameter is Ø420 mm (16.5 in).
Compare that with the standard OCD-42150, which has the same center distance and carries 150 kg (331 lb). The heavy duty machine is a different build. Palmary describes a reinforced Meehanite cast iron base and longitudinal and traverse slides with a hydrostatic structure, and the scale shows in the weight of 12,000 kg (26,455 lb).
The grinding end is sized to match. An 11 kW (14.8 hp) motor drives a Ø510 mm wheel that can be anything from 50 to 125 mm wide, at 33 m/s (6,496 ft/min). The wheelhead strokes 350 mm (13.8 in) and the table 1,970 mm (77.6 in), each at 10 m/min (394 ipm), on AC servo motors of 2.8 kW (3.8 hp) and 4.4 kW (5.9 hp).
Some flexibility is given up for stiffness. The work spindle head is fixed at 0°, so there is no swivelling it for face or angle work, and it turns at 0 to 210 rpm on a 2.9 kW (3.9 hp) servo motor. The table swivels from -1° to 5°, the widest range of the four OCD-45 lengths. The tailstock is hydraulic with 60 mm (2.4 in) of motion. FANUC control, a linear scale on X and a semi-enclosed splash guard are standard.
