Overview

The Drake GS:CG is a crown grinder, a CNC machine with 7 axes that grinds the drums used in making tapered roller bearings. It takes parts from 100 mm (3.9 in) to 355 mm (14.0 in) in diameter and up to 900 mm (35.4 in) bearing end-to-end, with a maximum grind length of 750 mm (29.5 in) centered on pivot.

What separates it from a thread grinder is the pivot. Drake's table lists a pivot axis (B) beside the linear axes and a programmable crown radius from 1.9 m (74.8 in) to 999 m (3,278 ft). Lead is programmable over 0 to 999 mm (0 to 39.3 in), and the ground form can be 63 mm (2.5 in) wide and 25 mm (1.0 in) deep.

The drives are named row by row. X and Z use Fanuc linear motors. The pivot is a ball screw with a Fanuc servo, the dresser axes W and Y use ball screws and Fanuc servos, and the rotary C axis is a servo through a gear box. The wheel head angle is set by a lead screw, manual or servo. Position feedback is by Heidenhain scales. The base is quartzite epoxy polymer, with cast iron tables and slides.

The wheel spindle is rated 22 kW (29.5 hp) on hydrostatic bearings and holds a wheel peripheral speed of 40 m/s (vc is constant). Wheels are 25 to 80 mm (1.0 to 3.1 in) wide on a 203.2 mm (8.0 in) bore, and the spent wheel diameter is 400 mm (15.7 in). The workhead turns at up to 200 rpm (50:1 gear box).

The machine weighs 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) and needs 52 kVA at 200-600 V. Coolant demand is 100 lpm @ 7 bar (26.4 gpm @ 101.5 psi) for the grind and 30 lpm @ 1-2 bar (7.9 gpm @ 14.5-29.0 psi) for bed wash. Drake says the redesigned controller swings from the front of the machine to the side, so the operator can reach the wheel, dresser and part during setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the GS:CG crown grinder make?

Drake describes its crown grinders as machines that grind drums for tapered roller bearings. The table shows what that involves: a programmable lead of 0 to 999 mm (0 to 39.3 in), a crown radius from 1.9 m (74.8 in) to 999 m (3,278 ft) and a form up to 63 mm (2.5 in) wide.

02 What size parts does it take?

Part diameter runs from 100 mm (3.9 in) to 355 mm (14.0 in). The longest part is 900 mm (35.4 in) bearing end-to-end and the maximum grind length is 750 mm (29.5 in) centered on pivot. The work table is 1,300 mm (51.2 in) long and 480 mm (18.9 in) wide.

03 How are the axes driven?

X and Z by Fanuc linear motors; the pivot axis B by a ball screw and Fanuc servo; the dresser axes W and Y by ball screws and Fanuc servos; the rotary axis C by a servo and gear box. Feedback is from Heidenhain scales, and the ways are rails with recirculating roller cars.

04 What wheel and dresser does the GS:CG use?

The wheel is 25 to 80 mm (1.0 to 3.1 in) wide on a 203.2 mm (8.0 in) bore, driven by a 22 kW (29.5 hp) spindle at a constant peripheral speed. The diamond roll dresser is 114 to 125 mm (4.5 to 4.9 in) in diameter, up to 32 mm (1.3 in) wide, on a 25.4 mm (1.0 in) bore.

05 What does the installation require?

Weight is 12,000 kg (26,455 lb). Electrical supply is 52 kVA at 200-600 V. Coolant is 100 lpm @ 7 bar (26.4 gpm @ 101.5 psi) for grinding plus 30 lpm @ 1-2 bar (7.9 gpm @ 14.5-29.0 psi) for bed wash, 130 lpm (34.3 gpm) in total, discharged 0.5 m (19.7 in) above the floor.
