Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Nexturn SA38XIII that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Nexturn SA38XIII takes the three-path layout of the X-III type to 38 mm (1.5 in) bar. It has eleven axes, a FANUC 31i-B control, 8,000 rpm on main and sub spindle and 270 mm (10.6 in) of turning length, the longest stroke Nexturn lists for this bar diameter.
Apart from the bore, it is the SA32XIII. Every row of the two columns matches except bar diameter and sub spindle chucking diameter: the same 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) main motor, the same tool groups, the same 2,600 × 1,400 × 1,850 mm (102.4 × 55.1 × 72.8 in) and 3,700 kg (8,157 lb). A buyer choosing between them is choosing a bar size and nothing else.
The more useful comparison is with the two-path SA38PYII. The SA38PYII lists 24 tools on eight axes and turns 210 mm (8.3 in) with its guide bush. The SA38XIII turns 270 mm and can put two tools into the cut at the main spindle, one from each of its opposing gang slides, while a third path finishes the back of the previous part. What it gives up is drive power on the secondary stations. Its cross and back tool motors are 1.0 kW (1.3 hp), with drilling limited to 10 mm (0.4 in) and M8 on both channels; the SA38PYII has a 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) cross unit.
Main-side tooling is split between channel 1, with five OD and four cross live tools, and channel 2, with two OD tools, four modular cross spindles and four ID tools. Two front-end face tools and eight back-end tools serve the sub spindle. On 38 mm stock the 1.5 / 2.2 kW (2.0 / 3.0 hp) sub spindle motor is the figure to weigh.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 270 mm (10.6 in) of turning length at 38 mm, against 250 mm (9.8 in) on the SA38PII
- Two opposing gang slides cut at the main spindle simultaneously under three-path control
- Eleven axes with Y1, Y2 and Y3
- Four-spindle cross unit on channel 1 and a four-spindle modular cross unit on channel 2
- Same footprint and weight as the SA32XIII
Limitations
- Sub spindle motor is 1.5 / 2.2 kW (2.0 / 3.0 hp), below the 2.2 / 3.7 kW (3.0 / 5.0 hp) of the SA38PYII
- Cross and back tool drives are 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) with a 10 mm (0.4 in) / M8 drilling limit
- Main spindle motor is unchanged from the SA32XIII despite the larger bar
- No non guide bush mode is listed for this type

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Not in the brochure's table. The SA38XIII takes 38 mm (1.5 in) bar and chucks 38 mm in the sub spindle; the SA32XIII takes 32 mm (1.3 in). Spindle motors, speeds, tool positions, power consumption, dimensions and the 3,700 kg (8,157 lb) weight are printed the same.
02
The SA38XIII is a three-path, eleven-axis machine with 270 mm (10.6 in) of stroke and a FANUC 31i-B. The SA38PYII is a two-path, eight-axis machine with 24 tools, 210 mm (8.3 in) of guide-bush stroke, a non guide bush mode and a 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) cross unit. Both use a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) main spindle.
03
The main spindle drills to 12 mm (0.5 in) and taps to M10. Cross tools on both channels are limited to 10 mm (0.4 in) and M8 at up to 6,000 rpm, and back-end face drilling to 10 mm (0.4 in) and M8. A cross disc mill can be 40 mm (1.6 in) in diameter.
04
A pneumatic brake unit is standard on this size, as is the synchronous rotary guide bush holder unit. Nexturn describes the guide bushing as a rotary synchronous type with a dual bearing structure. Both spindles have Cs control.
