Overview
With a 400 mm (15.5 in) chuck and 460 / 340 Nm (339.5 / 251 ft-lb) of spindle torque, the EMAG VL 6 is built for chucked parts up to 300 mm (12 in) in diameter and 250 mm (10 in) long. Power is 39 / 28 kW (52.5 / 37.5 hp) and the spindle tops out at 3,100 rpm.
That speed is the figure to check first. At 300 mm, 3,100 rpm gives far more surface speed than any turning insert needs, but on a part with small bores or a narrow spigot the spindle runs out of speed sooner than on the smaller machines. The VL 6 earns its place on large, heavy cuts, not on parts that could fit a VL 4.
The turret holds 12 tools in VDI 50 holders, one size up from the VDI 40 of the VL 4. X travel is 900 mm (35.5 in), Z travel is 495 mm (19.5 in), and swing is 420 mm (16.5 in). Both axes rapid at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm), the same rate the VL 4 and VL 8 list.
Placed against its neighbours, the VL 6 sits between the VL 4, with 280 / 202 Nm (206.5 / 149 ft-lb) and a 260 mm (10 in) chuck, and the VL 8, with 780 / 600 Nm (575.5 / 442.5 ft-lb) and a 500 mm (19.5 in) chuck. For heavier roughing on a similar diameter, the VSC 400 lists 1,200 Nm (885 ft-lb) with a 445 mm (17.5 in) chuck. The table here does not list driven tools, a Y axis, the control or the machine weight.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 460 / 340 Nm (339.5 / 251 ft-lb) of torque and 39 / 28 kW (52.5 / 37.5 hp)
- Takes parts up to 300 mm (12 in) in diameter and 250 mm (10 in) long
- 400 mm (15.5 in) chuck with 420 mm (16.5 in) of swing
- 12-station turret with VDI 50 holders
- 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids over 900 mm (35.5 in) of X travel
Limitations
- Top speed is 3,100 rpm, limiting cutting speed on small diameters
- Workpiece length stops at 250 mm (10 in)
- The table lists no driven tools or Y axis
- Machine weight, control and footprint are not given in the table

Frequently Asked Questions
01
300 mm (12 in) in diameter and 250 mm (10 in) in length. The chuck is 400 mm (15.5 in) and swing is 420 mm (16.5 in).
02
The spindle is sized for torque, 460 / 340 Nm (339.5 / 251 ft-lb), and large diameters. At 300 mm the speed is ample; on small bores and spigots it is the limit, so parts that fit a smaller machine are better made there.
03
The VL 8 turns parts up to 400 mm (15.5 in) with 780 / 600 Nm (575.5 / 442.5 ft-lb), a 500 mm (19.5 in) chuck and 1,110 mm (43.5 in) of X travel, but runs to 2,850 rpm. The VL 6 covers parts up to 300 mm (12 in) at up to 3,100 rpm.
04
VDI 50, in a 12-station turret. The VL 4 uses VDI 40 and the VL 8 uses VDI 60, so moving between sizes means a different holder stock.
