Overview

The Hyundai WIA HD-Y Series is a family of four heavy-duty CNC turning centers with Y-axis milling capability, built on box way construction for maximum rigidity during combined turning and milling operations. The series includes the HD2200Y (8-inch chuck), HD2600Y (10-inch chuck), HD3100YA (10-inch chuck), and HD3100Y (12-inch chuck), spanning the full range of medium to large heavy-duty Y-axis turning.

The HD2200Y and HD2600Y share an 18.5/15 kW (25/20 hp) spindle. The HD2200Y runs at 4,000 RPM with 206.2/125.4 N.m torque through an 8-inch chuck, while the HD2600Y delivers substantially more torque at 400.7/243.7 N.m through a 10-inch chuck at 3,500 RPM. Both offer 300 mm max turning diameter with 610 mm turning length and X/Y/Z travel of 215/110/680 mm. The larger HD3100YA (10-inch) and HD3100Y (12-inch) step up to 26/18.5 kW (35/25 hp) spindle power with 420 mm turning diameter and 760 mm turning length. The HD3100Y with 12-inch chuck delivers an impressive 1,051/672 N.m of torque at 2,800 RPM.

All four models feature box way guideways for superior vibration damping during heavy interrupted cuts, 12-station turrets with BMT55P wedge-type Y-axis tooling, and live milling capability at 6,000 RPM (HD2200Y/HD2600Y) or 5,000 RPM (HD3100YA/HD3100Y). Rapid traverse is 24/10/30 m/min on X/Y/Z across all models. The wedge-type Y-axis turret provides significantly better rigidity than standard VDI turrets for milling operations.

New HD-Y Series machines price between $100,000 and $200,000 depending on model and options. The series competes with the DN Solutions Puma 2600Y, Mazak Quick Turn 250MY, and Okuma LB3000 EX MY. For shops needing heavy-duty Y-axis turning capability with the vibration damping advantages of box way construction, the HD-Y Series delivers a compelling combination of rigidity, milling capability, and Korean value pricing.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box way construction on all axes provides superior vibration damping for heavy interrupted cuts during combined turning and milling
  • Four chuck sizes (8/10/10/12 inch) allow shops to right-size the machine to their specific workpiece diameter requirements
  • BMT55P wedge-type Y-axis turret delivers significantly better milling rigidity than standard VDI turrets
  • HD3100Y with 12-inch chuck delivers 1,051 N.m torque for aggressive roughing on the largest workpieces
  • 6,000 RPM live tooling on HD2200Y/HD2600Y enables productive milling, drilling, and tapping operations
  • 15-25% price advantage over comparable Japanese Y-axis turning centers with box way construction

Limitations

  • Box ways require periodic adjustment and re-scraping over time compared to maintenance-free linear guides
  • 24 m/min X-axis rapid traverse is slower than linear guide machines, increasing non-cutting time on short-cycle work
  • No sub-spindle option in the HD-Y Series — shops needing backworking should consider the HD-SY or L-SY series
  • Hyundai WIA North American service network is smaller than Haas, Mazak, or Okuma dealership coverage

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the differences between the four HD-Y models?

HD2200Y: 8-inch chuck, 4,000 RPM, 206 N.m torque, 6,000 RPM live tooling. HD2600Y: 10-inch chuck, 3,500 RPM, 401 N.m torque, 6,000 RPM live tooling. HD3100YA: 10-inch chuck, 3,500 RPM, 734 N.m torque, 5,000 RPM live tooling with more travel. HD3100Y: 12-inch chuck, 2,800 RPM, 1,051 N.m torque, 5,000 RPM live tooling. Each step up adds clamping force and torque.

02 How does the HD-Y Series differ from the standard HD Series?

The HD-Y Series adds Y-axis travel (110-120 mm) and a BMT55P wedge-type turret with live tooling capability. Standard HD Series machines are 2-axis turning only (or basic milling without Y-axis). The Y-axis enables off-center milling, cross-drilling, and complex contouring operations that would otherwise require a secondary milling machine.

03 What does a new HD-Y Series machine cost?

The HD2200Y starts around $100,000-$130,000. The HD2600Y runs $120,000-$155,000. The HD3100YA prices at $145,000-$180,000, and the HD3100Y with 12-inch chuck reaches $170,000-$200,000. Options like high-pressure coolant, chip conveyor, and bar feeder interface add to the base price.

04 What is the advantage of the BMT55P wedge-type turret?

The BMT55P wedge-type turret clamps the tool holder with a wedge mechanism that provides significantly more rigidity than standard VDI bolt-on turrets. This rigidity translates to less deflection during milling operations, enabling heavier cuts and better surface finishes. The turret design also provides faster tool indexing and better repeatability.
